Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Swimbaits fool trophy fish

Nathan Brooks, executive producer of the “Kentucky Afield” television show, holds a 37-inch striped bass caught from Lake Cumberland last April on a swimbait. Swimbaits are an effective lure in spring through early summer for black bass, striped bass and even crappie.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 20, 2017) – Anglers with a bit of salt in their hair remember fondly the venerable Sassy Shad, the paddle-tailed, shad-shaped soft plastic wonder that caught practically anything that swims.
In the fishing lure world, what is old oftentimes becomes new again. Over the last decade or so, the soft-plastic swimbait stormed the fishing world, looking remarkably like a Sassy Shad with refinements.

BC Bassmasters @ Lake Beshear

Robert Parker and Matt Embry taking 1st place with 19.43 lbs

Butler County Bassmasters held their second open tournament for the 2017 season at Lake Beshear Saturday April the 15th. It was a beautiful day to be on the water.  Lake Beshear usually has some of the biggest stringers of fish weighed in the entire year, and it didn’t disappoint. The lake conditions were good with 59 fish being brought to the weigh scale for a total weight of 167.64 pounds for the tournament. 22 boats participated in the tournament with Robert Parker and Matt Embry taking 1st place with 19.43 lbs., and 2nd John Jackson and Jeremy Priddy 17.89 lbs.

Butler County Middle School Dominates First Meet in School History

BCMS travelled to Grayson County to compete in its first ever meet on April 13th.  The Bears showed up from the very start dominating Grayson County Middle School and Central Hardin Middle School in multiple events.
“It is great to see these young athletes working hard and reaping the rewards.” Explained Coach Donaldson. “Having a middle school team allows many of these students to be involved outside of the classroom, and leads to a successful high school program.

MES Patriot Archers Kentucky NASP State Champions, Get 2nd Place in 3D

 On Saturday, April 1st, 2017, the MES Patriot Archers travelled to Louisville, KY for the Kentucky NASP State Tournament, where they earned the new title of Kentucky NASP State Champions.  The Patriots outshot 74 other teams with a score of 3175.  Each archer has worked very hard and has earned every right to call him/herself a champion.

SOFTBALL: Bears go 2-1 in round-robin; hold off Trinity 7-5 in district win

The last several days have been busy ones for the Butler County Softball team as the Bears hosted a round-robin tournament on Saturday, April 1, and a district game on Tuesday, April 4.  Butler County defeated Thomas Nelson 9-0, fell 15-5 to Montini Catholic (IL), beat Nelson County 12-0, and outlasted a late surge from Trinity (Whitesville) to earn the 7-5 district win.

Butler County Bassmasters travel to Lake Malone

First place- David and Ryan Coleman

Butler County Bassmasters held their first regular season tournament for the 2017 season at Lake Malone Saturday March the 25th. It was an extremely windy day but the weather cooperated and the storms in the area held off until the tournament was finished. The lake conditions were good with 55 fish being brought to the weigh scale for a total weight of 148.77 pounds for the tournament, with all fish being released alive back into Lake Malone. 30 boats participated in the tournament with Ryan Coleman and David Coleman taking 1st place with 14.64 lbs.,

SOFTBALL: Bears beat Grayson, McLean; fall to Carlisle & Marshall

The Butler County Bears varsity squad is off to a .500 start after four games with wins over Grayson County and McLean County and losses to Carlisle County and Marshall County.

BC Bassmasters kicks off 2017 season.

Butler County Bassmasters held their first Open tournament for the 2017 season at Peabody WMA Saturday March the 18th. The air temperature was a little chilly but the lake conditions were good with 66 fish being brought to the weigh scale for a total weight of 126.50 pounds for the tournament, with all fish being released alive back into South and Island Lakes. 31 boats participated in the tournament with Ryan Coleman and John McEwen taking 1st place with 17.01 lbs.
