Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Fast-growing saugeye offer anglers another option

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 6, 2017) – With every passing season, anglers are building their knowledge base about how to catch saugeye stocked in a handful of central and northern Kentucky lakes.
A saugeye is a fast-growing cross between a walleye and sauger that can reach 15 to 19 inches in its second year. The hybridization is evident in the species’ physical appearance. Saugeye display the faint saddle markings of a sauger and the white fin tips of a walleye. Unlike either, it features black smudges on its dorsal fin.

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Encourage your young angler’s growing interest this summer

Bridges Hardin, 14, of Shelby County holds a chunky smallmouth bass caught last week from Elkhorn Creek in Franklin County. Stream fishing for smallmouth bass offers many things, in addition to catching fish, to keep a young angler’s attention. These experiences help hook young anglers into a lifetime of fishing.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 8, 2017) – If free fishing weekend was a homerun with your kiddos, you might be wondering about how to keep the momentum going throughout the summer.
Take a cue from them: keep it fun.
Does this mean they need to catch a fish or get a bite every cast? Not necessarily. Fun can be wading a creek or floating down one for the first time in a canoe or kayak. Fun can be seeing how many different species of fish you can catch or how many fishing holes you can visit this summer. Fun can be catching your own live bait then using it to catch dinner.
