Bears hang on in Elkton

Last Friday, the Butler County Bears traveled to face a winless Todd County Central team. Although the Rebels had not scored double digits in a game all year, they put together a gutsy effort to scare the Bears, who escaped with a 27-23 district win.

Early on, it was all Butler County. On the first defensive series, Dillon Brosnan and Conner Reed forced a fumble that Mason Barks quickly pounced on. Then, Blake Graham’s run off tackle from twelve yards out and Rex Henderson’s extra point put the Bears up 7-0.

Defense Impressive Against Braves

Facing conditions that appeared more favorable for the rushing attack of Union County, the Butler County Bears—shorthanded to begin with—demonstrated smash mouth football that so many appreciate.

Coach Emmick crowded the box with a 4-4 cover three scheme. His players answered the challenge by staying in their lanes and keeping the guests out of the end zone for most all the game.

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Muskellunge fishing heats up in fall

Diddle Johnson landed this muskie.

The angler’s whoop traveled fast and loud over the water from the back of Buck Creek on Cave Run Lake.
Bringing a trophy muskellunge to the boat after a spirited fight uncorks raw emotions and provides a unique sense of satisfaction. In this instance, the 45-inch torpedo of a fish was a new personal best and the fourth muskellunge the angler had caught on this cool, calm, overcast Friday in mid-September.
The fall muskellunge bite was turning on, and word traveled quickly. A parking lot that held only a handful of boat trailers on Friday was full Saturday.
