Four Bears average double figures in scoring

MORGANTOWN — Four Butler County players averaged double figures in scoring during the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season.

Brody Hunt led the Bears in scoring, averaging a team-high 14 points per game. Hunt scored a team-best 378 points in 27 games.

Behind Hunt as the second-leading scoring for Butler County, Jagger Henderson averaged 12.5 points per game.

Ranking third in scoring for the Bears, Lawson Rice averaged 12 points per game.

Embry resigns after 20 years

Butler County Softball Coach John Embry has resigned after 20 years and 19 seasons (one season lost to Covid) at the helm.

Coach Embry coached 19 seasons and was elected into the Kentucky Prep Softball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Record: 382-255 (382 wins is 15th all time in the history of Fast Pitch Softball in the State of Kentucky)

Lady Bears fall in region tournament's opening round

OWENSBORO — Butler County was limited late as Breckinridge County battled back from behind to win 55-46 in the opening round of the 3rd Region Girls' Basketball Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Monday, Feb. 28.

The loss eliminated Butler County from the 3rd Region Girls' Basketball Tournament. Among the top hoops teams in the 3rd Region, Butler County exited the 2021-22 girls' high school basketball season 25-4.

Lady Bears defeat Edmonson County, capture district title

MORGANTOWN — Butler County pulled away to defeat Edmonson County 49-26 in the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament title game on Thursday, Feb. 24. Among the the top girls' high school basketball teams in the 3rd Region, Butler County won its first 12th District championship since 1993.

Bears fall to Grayson County in district tournament semifinals

MORGANTOWN - Butler County faltered late as Grayson County battled back from behind to win 49-45 in the semifinals of the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 22. 

The loss eliminated Butler County from the boys' high school basketball postseason.

Following the win, Grayson County advanced to the 12th District Boys' Basketball Tournament title game. 

Prior to faltering, Butler County led 35-21 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

MORGANTOWN — Passing its first postseason test, Butler County beat Grayson County 49-37 in the semifinals of the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 21. 

With the win, Butler County advances to the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament title game. 

The loss eliminated Grayson County from the girls' high school basketball postseason.

Starting strong, tournament host Butler County outscored Grayson County 9-3 in the first quarter.

Dockery named Region 3 Coach of the Year

LEXINGTON — Butler County head coach Calvin Dockery has been named the Region 3 Boys' Basketball Coach of the Year.

Dockery earned the honor from the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC), which honored coaches and players of the year in each of the state's 16 regions. 

Muhlenberg County senior guard Trey Lovell was named the Region 3 Player of the Year by the KABC.

Bears pull away to beat Thomas Nelson, 83-59

MORGANTOWN — Butler County pulled away to beat visiting Thomas Nelson 83-59 in a boys' high school basketball regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 17.

Following the win, Butler County improved to 16-10. 

The Bears moved ahead early and forced Thomas Nelson to play from behind throughout the boys' high school basketball matchup.

Butler County shot 56.7 percent (38-of-67) from the field. The Bears connected on five of 16 three-point field goal attempts.

Lady Bears compile 23-3 record in regular season

MORGANTOWN — Among the top teams in the Third Region, Butler County compiled a 23-3 record during the 2021-22 girls' high school basketball regular season.

Butler County will carry momentum into the 12th District Girls' Basketball Tournament.

Under the direction of head coach Lexie Belcher, Butler County swept its three 12th District opponents during the regular season. Butler County exited the regular season 6-0 in the 12th District.

Butler County archery teams wins region championships

MORGANTOWN — The Butler County High School and Butler County Middle School archery teams each won Region 3 championships on Saturday, Feb. 12.

The Butler County archery program's award winners from the region tournament were as follows: 

Alex Elmore (2nd - High School Male), Maelynn Bilicki (4th - High School Female), William Jared (1st - Middle School Male), Graysen Henderson (4th - Middle school Male), Jacob Vinson (5th - Middle School Male).
