The rugged countryside of Butler County was filled with the sounds of baying hounds this past Saturday, January 28, as the Butler County Beagle Club hosted a one day field competition where young Beagles were judged in their ability to track down wild renegade rabbits at the United Beagle Gundog Federation’s running grounds in Jetson.

After the rabbitt.

Packs of excited Beagles rallied to trail the scent of renegade rabbits for the one day event, and afterwards were judged also on their appearance. The hounds and their handlers came from different parts of Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and Illinois.

The Butler County Beagle Club has fifteen active members, and the Club host many of the events at the UBGF grounds, which is spread out over 240 acres that are fenced off into three areas, and comes complete with a modern clubhouse, kennels, and a state-of-the art horse barn that has skylights.

“We were very happy to have a sizable crowd that enjoyed themselves here,” said Tim Young, President of the Club.

The two legged visitors were treated to a hot breakfast and home-style lunch prepared by long time Butler County Beagler James “Woody” Woodcock. Woody and his help started everyone’s day off with scrambled eggs, biscuits, and sausages and served home-made chili along with the sandwiches for lunch, followed up by oven fresh upside down pineapple cake.
The crew also kept the coffee pots filled all day and by sundown all was over but for the Thank you’s.
