Butler County Fiscal Court held its first meeting of 2023 on Monday, January 9. All magistrates, including newly-elected Allen Smith of the Third District, were in attendance.

At the inaugural meeting of the year, Morgantown City Council members, representatives from city boards, city staff and other guests were on hand as Mayor Billy Phelps gave his annual State of the City Address.

Part II of the session is set to convene on Feb. 7. Lawmakers have until Feb. 21 to introduce new bills in the Senate and until Feb. 22 to introduce new bills in the House.

In 2022 there were 35 coroner calls made by the Butler County Coroner's Office and 33 provisional death reports signed for a cremation to be done.

68 calls made:

23 ruled natural deaths

33 provisional deaths signed for cremation in 2022; this increased by 2 with 31 in 2021

6 ruled accidental deaths (vehicle related)

Five overdose deaths

One homicide and 0 suicides occurred in Butler County in 2022

Following an ongoing investigation, the Bowling Green - Warren County Drug Task Force developed information of a potential load of narcotics coming to Bowling Green. We enlisted assistance from the Kentucky State Police Interdiction Team.  Detectives and KSP interdiction located the suspect vehicle returning to Kentucky from the South. When KSP initiated a traffic stop a brief pursuit followed but Troopers were able to stop the vehicle about 5 miles south of Bowling Green on I-65 at 2 PM yesterday (January 4, 2023).  The occupants were arrested without further resistance.
