BCHS Seniors Receive $1.9 Million in Scholarships and Awards

On Thursday night Butler County High School Seniors accepted $1,917,154.00 in scholarships and awards.
“This, $1.9 million, is the largest amount of awards in school history.  We have a total of 133 awards,” said Duane Curry, BCHS Counselor.

The largest single scholarship was awarded to Candace Ibarra.  She received an $84,000 ROTC scholarship to Florida A&M.(pictured above)

Campbellsville University honors 160 teachers throughout 59 Kentucky school districts for excellence in teaching

Campbellsville University honored 160 teachers from 59 school districts throughout Kentucky by receiving the Campbellsville University Excellence in Teaching Award Saturday, May 11 at Winters Dining Hall in the E. Bruce Heilman Student Center Complex on the CU campus.
    Gary Griesser, known as the “Singing Motivator,” commended the teachers for their awards and told them to “take care of yourselves first in order to take care of others.”

Synchronized Swimming At Rochester Dam

Whether it is the particular water level or a case of hanging out too much with Alaskan salmon, something has been causing a certain variety of fish to spend Thursday and Friday acting like they could jump the Rochester dam. Several even misjudged and landed on shore rocks instead. As always, the rocks can be slippery and dangerous so viewing should be done at a safe distance.

WKU Alumnus to appear on Jeopardy!

Leigh Hoopes

It is not every day that someone gets to realize that one of their dreams has come true. This statement cannot be said about Western Kentucky Alumnus, Leigh Hoopes. Leigh will fulfill one of her lifelong goals on July 26, 2013. That is when she will compete as a contestant on one of the longest running game shows in America, Jeopardy!.

'For a Portrait' Stops in Morgantown

Nate Morguelan, a casual photographer from Louisville Kentucky, is a traveling around the state on his moped.  He has no money. Instead of cash, his survival depends on his charm, the generosity of strangers, and his ability to take a nice photo.

For a meal, gas or a place to sleep, Nate will trade you a portrait.  He even has a small photo printer he travels with.

Local Drug Court program requesting supplies for U.S. military troops in Afghanistan for National Drug Court Month

Program needs donation sites, items for soldiers-In celebration of National Drug Court Month, the Butler County Drug Court program is collecting supplies for active-duty soldiers in Afghanistan throughout May. The program is asking the public to give items the troops need and is requesting that area agencies and businesses serve as donation sites. Donation boxes are set up at IGA  in Morgantown, the box will stay in store thru end of May.

Board recognizes various school groups, accepts insurance bids, clarifies pocket knife policy

At Tuesday night’s Butler County Board of Education meeting at Butler County High School, the Board recognized a host of student achievements, found a way to save money on insurance for the coming fiscal year, and heard a report from a BCHS coach on the impact of his Wellness program on students.

UPDATE: Former Bus Driver Granted Shock Probation

UPDATE: 5/14/13 Circuit Judge Ronnie Dortch has granted Sandra Ford shock probation.  She was released from Butler County Jail today.

Orginial story:A former Butler County school bus driver facing multiple charges from a DUI arrest in March of 2012 was sentenced to five years in prison with no probation on February 12, 2013.  A motion for shock probation was filed on March 4, 2013, on behalf of Sandra Ford, 56, of Morgantown.  Circuit Judge Ronnie Dortch took the motion into consideration on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.

Fight leads to charges for students

A fight between juveniles at the Butler County High School Athletic Fieldhouse has led to charges being filed on three Butler County students, and has prompted changes to some school policies.

Fiscal Court Travels to Provo

The Butler County Fiscal Court and a score of visitors were treated to a potluck supper on Monday night at the Provo Rural Development Center as the Court went on the road for their regular May meeting. Because the meeting has to be considered a special called meeting because of the venue change the agenda for the meeting was frozen beforehand. Other than that change the meeting was business as usual.
