Operation Christmas Child

A simple gift!!!!  It is Shoe Box time again.  Since 1999 Butler Countians have sent approximately 5790 shoe boxes loaded with gifts, through Franklin Graham’s Ministry.  These boxes have gone all over the world.  Last year some boxes from here went to Ghana, Africa and sometimes the children write back to say thank you.  Some of our very own Butler Countians go the processing centers and help pack these boxes for shipment.  Perhaps you saw the Diane Sawyer TV special last week of Native Americans in South Dakota.  Shoeboxes are sent to many of these children.  It’s easy to pack a shoebox—i

Pottersfield Asylum

Blood-chilling laughter and terrified shrieks fill the air at Pottersfield Asylum Friday and Saturday nights just after dark. Visitors to the Asylum travel through the wooded compound that once belonged to Dr. Pottersfield. Be prepared to be scared as you make your way through the dark and twisted playground of a mad scientist to see the aftermath of his "genius." You definitely don't want to spend the night at the campground or get a haircut from the barber here. Don't trust the babysitters either. Watch out for the IZCU Members lurking in the dark.

4-H Country Ham Project – Curing Ham at the Extension Service

By:  Lloyd G. Saylor, County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development: The Kentucky 4-H Country Ham program is a program that helps youth to develop applicable real world skills in two ways. First, youth learn about the process, history, and science of curing hams. This process briefly covers issues such as food safety, meat production, basic chemistry principles, and food preservation. After the actual process of curing their hams (each youth receives two hams) with a local expert on the process, the youth select their best ham and exhibit it at the country ham contest at the state fair.

Preserving your Halloween Masterpiece

It’s a disheartening sight to see your Halloween masterpiece cave in on itself, dilapidated and decaying on your porch long before All Hallows Eve arrives.  While carving pumpkins with my daughter last year I decided I would not fall victim to having my creation rot before it was truly appreciated by casual observers.  So I set out to find the best way to preserve our carved pumpkins.  While researching the topic I found a method that worked great and I want to pass it on.
