Lady Bears fall to Todd County Central

ELKTON — Butler County suffered its first setback in the 2022-23 girls' high school basketball season as host Todd County Central prevailed to win 53-36 on Monday, Dec. 5.

Todd County Central took control early, outscoring Butler County 17-4 in the first quarter.

The Lady Bears faced a deficit throughout the girls' high school basketball game.

Todd County Central led 33-24 at halftime but faced more resistance from Butler County during the second half.

Bears defeat Daviess County, 82-74

MORGANTOWN — Returning to the win column, Butler County defeated visiting Daviess County 82-74 in a boys' high school basketball game on Tuesday, Dec. 6. 

The Bears won after dropping a game to Owensboro over the weekend.

With the win, Butler County improved to 4-1. 

The Bears shook of a slow start to claim the win.

Moving ahead early, Daviess County outscored the Bears 17-13 in the first quarter.

The Panthers led the Bears 34-31 at halftime but faltered after the intermission period.

On the rise: Bears ranked fifth in Media Region 3 Poll

MORGANTOWN — Butler County is ranked fifth in the Media Region 3 Boys' Basketball Poll.

The Bears are ranked ahead of McLean County, Whitesville Trinity, Muhlenberg County, Grayson County and Daviess County. 

Butler County is listed behind Hancock County, Ohio County, Owensboro Catholic and top-ranked Owensboro, which received nine of the 10 first-place votes in the poll. 

Third-ranked Ohio County received the other first-place vote.

Unranked, Meade County received votes for the poll.

Butler County entered the week 3-1.

Lady Bears outlast Cumberland County in opener, 50-45

MORGANTOWN — Butler County outlasted visiting Cumberland County 50-45 in its season opener on Friday, Dec. 2. 

The Lady Bears shook off a slow start to notch the win.

Cumberland County managed to outscore Butler County 15-10 in the first quarter. 

But Butler County battled back.

Butler County and Cumberland County were tied 24-24 at halftime. 

After the two girls' high school basketball teams swapped leads on multiple occasions, Butler County led 33-31 at the end of the third quarter.

BOWLING GREEN — The Butler County High School archery team finished first in a match at Bowling Green on Saturday, Dec. 3.

Bears top Metcalfe County, 87-57

MORGANTOWN — Continuing to win early in the 2022-23 boys' high school basketball season, Butler County topped visiting Metcalfe County 87-57 on Thursday, Dec. 1.

After notching the win, Butler County moved to 3-0.

The Bears started strong, doubling up Metcalfe County 28-14 in the first quarter. 

Butler County led 42-31 at halftime and remained in control throughout the second half, quickly stretching its lead after the intermission period. 

The Bears led 76-47 at the end of the third quarter.
