Joe K. Morris: Armchair All Star

Fall certainly brings ample things to discuss if you're interested in sports. From NASCAR to the NFL it's been a headline week in sports, so there's much ground to cover.

First to the NFL. I'm starting to think the 49ers are for real, that the Eagles are already better than they were under Andy Reid, and that it might behoove the Mayor of Cleveland to outlaw football within the city limits. I must also say that after his 7 touchdown night to open the season I've decided that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback I will ever see play the game.

Bears drop homecoming game to Russellville

Butler County found itself on the wrong end of a lopsided score on Friday night in Morgantown as the Russellville Panthers handed the Bears a 41-0 homecoming loss.
Poor field position plagued the Bears from the outset as a fumble on kick-off return put the ball on the BC 1-yard line.  Still, carries by Butler's Jake Martin and Travis Brooks gave the Bears a first down on their first possession, pushing the ball out to their 12-yard line.  The momentum was short-lived as three plays later Butler was forced to punt.

Butler County Bassmasters Celebrating 25 Years

Butler County Bassmasters was founded in 1988 when several men in the Aberdeen Baptist Church got together and decided to put together a bass club with Michael Embry serving as the first club Tournament Director. In the early tournaments, the club would meet at the church with their two man boats and puddle jumpers and take off from there. Strip pits, along with the Mud and Green Rivers in the county were the main tournament sites.

KY Dept. of Fish & Wildlife: Barren River Below the Dam

This is the upstream view from the Barren River #3 Voluntary Public Access site at the KY 101 Bridge in Warren County. Barren River offers paddlers incredible scenery, highly productive fishing and easy, gentle floating. Visitors can combine a weekend of floating the river and boating on Barren River Lake.

When pioneers first saw the section of south-central Kentucky south and east of what is now Glasgow, the vast grasslands confounded them. They felt the soil too poor to support trees and believed the region barren. The grassy area attracted many bison, elk and deer, and also Native Americans who often hid in the tall grass of these prairies to ambush unsuspecting settlers as well as game.

2013 BCHS Boys Soccer Team Underway

The boy’s high school soccer team, coached by Jim Melton, is a little short when it comes to seniors. Only having two seniors is rough, but with the team holding seven juniors, ten sophomores, four freshman and three middle school athletes, this will help build the soccer program in the years to come.

BCHS Boys' Golf

The Butler County High School Boys' Golf Team has been very busy so far this season; they have had at least three matches every week since the kickoff in early August. On August 27th, the boys traveled to Breckinridge County. Ten golfers from Butler County participated; Hunter Cardwell, Houston Jones and Brandon Jones each shot 48, Remmington Harpe 53, Jon Zlater and Trevor Dockery each had a 54, Easton Jones 56, Eddie Phelps with a 57, Skyler Moore with a 59, Zack West with a 73. It was a good match for all of the younger players to experience the pressure of a different golf course.
