John Porter, Jr., my 5^th great grandfather, was born in 1759 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was the son of John Porter, Sr. and Mary Polly Anthony who came from Belfast, Ireland. John, Sr.

The annual Progressive Ag School Farm Safety Day took place on Wednesday, October 2nd at the Charles Black City Park.  Mrs. Leeann Daughtery, Butler County FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher is the Ag Safety Day Program Coordinator.

Did you know that Kentucky has the highest incidence of cancer and the highest number of cancer deaths in the country?  Smoking plays a huge role in this number.  According to the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, smoking causes 34 percent of all cancer cases in Kentucky.  Also, 4,830 new cases of lung cancer related to smoking are diagnosed every year in the state.  

On Friday October the 4th, the Morgantown Post Office's lobby turned PINK, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Post Master Joey Elms and staff is providing refreshements and free gifts to all customers. Breast Cancer Awareness stamps are also on sale, and a portion of the sale goes to BCA research. The Morgantown Post Office is currently in 2nd place in the region for sales of the stamp. Please stop by the post office today!

Almost everyone I know is an avid reader, so I asked them to share some recommendations.

Due to the increasing number of homeless inmates we are seeing at the Butler County Jail we are taking efforts to assist offenders at release. Recently we have had a growing number of inmates who are either leaving to the street and have no home or are being taken to the Greyhound Bus Station for transport to Halfway Houses at release.

Most of the these offenders have no money, no family support, and only the clothing on their back. We are averaging 1 inmate per week being released with nothing, so based on these numbers we are hoping to prepare between 50-60 backpacks per year.

Last July, Med Center Health and Butler County Schools partnered together to bring the very first Athletic Trainer to Butler County High School. Athletic Trainer Noel Belcher, a 2010 graduate of BCHS, returned to Morgantown after working in Owensboro, KY at Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Owensboro, servicing Owensboro High School. As the Athletic Trainer, Belcher is responsible for athletic injury prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of BCHS student-athletes.

Saturday, October 19, Richland Baptist Church is hosting a women's conference. The theme is "Fall in Love with Jesus.”  The conference is from 9 a.m. to noon, with lunch to follow.

Baby Shower for Lexie & Noel Belcher on October 20^th from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm in the First Baptist Fellowship Hall. The shower is  for a little girl, and they are registered at Target.
