Jarrod Jacobs: "Some Things We Cannot Change"

Many begin a new year trying to change certain things about themselves. These can include some lofty goals, and this is certainly a worthwhile effort. Let us remember, though, that there are some things we cannot change! In the long ago, Solomon said, “I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered” (Ecc. 1:14-15). This is a hard truth for many to grasp. Put simply; there are some things in life that we cannot change!

Jim Waters: Legislation brings needed balance to governing of Kentucky schools

The state Senate should be lauded for making reforms to Kentucky’s education system – specifically the way public schools are governed – a top legislative priority during this year’s General Assembly session.

Senate Bill 1 builds on past improvements to bring even more sense and saneness to the relationship between School Based Decision-Making (SBDM) councils and those held accountable for districts, primarily superintendents and the locally elected boards who hire them.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

These days, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is a juggernaut.  You have the Avengers series of movies, Guardians of the Galaxy volumes 1 and 2(I’m still hoping for a third), Hawkeye, Spiderman movies and much more than I could fit into this column.  But did you know that their first Marvel movie was a dud? I didn’t either until watching AXS-TV’s show Year In Review-1986.

My stepmom is starting to show signs of dementia.  She stays with my sister, Lorrie, in Prestonsburg, most of the time.  When Lorrie and her husband, Charles, go on vacation, she rotates between my two brothers’ homes in Taylorsville.  Lorrie says she notices when Mom has a break in her routine, the dementia gets worse.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Does It Matter What We Believe?"

Many today ask this question in reference to religious matters. Some will say that it does not matter what we believe so long as we are honest and sincere about religious issues. Others will say that what we believe matters religiously. Which answer is correct? Let us look to the Bible and see whether or not what I believe “matters.”

Senator C.B. Embry's Legislative Update

Week 1

As we officially gavel in the Kentucky General Assembly’s 2022 Regular Session, your legislators will tackle key issues most important to you that enhance the quality of life of Kentuckians.

The Interim Joint Committees met in the fall and listened to the thoughts and concerns of districts across the Commonwealth. Seeds sown during that interim period have informed this General Assembly and will ensure a fruitful 60-day session establishing policies that improve the lives of Kentucky’s residents.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Change is a constant in life – whether we like it or not. Jim Rohn said, “If you don’t like where you are, change it. You’re not a tree.” I anticipate change in three areas: the changes of a new year, a change in my daily responsibilities, and a change in my column’s publication schedule.

On Christmas morning, Garey and I got up and got dressed to go to Natalie’s, Scott’s and Sabria’s house.  I was bustling around, making sure I had all the presents together, so Garey could help load them, when I noticed he was wearing a shirt I had been looking for.

“Where did you find that shirt?” I asked.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Happy New Year!"

2022 is upon us, and it is a year yet untouched by men’s mistakes. Thus far, it is free of worry, care, death, disease, and destruction. As we think of the possibilities that lie before us, what will we do with this new year? Some make plans and call them “resolutions,” while others have made no plans at all for the new year. Sadly, many of those who make plans never implement them!
