Jim Waters: Budget belies big spenders' misleading claims, provides funding for teacher raises

House leaders tossed aside the time-wasting tradition of waiting until the governor submits his spending suggestions during the General Assembly’s second week by filing House Bill 1 (HB 1) on the fourth day of this year’s session, passing the $27.8 billion General Fund budget by a vote of 85-8 on the 12th day of the 60-day legislative session.

Why not?

In the past, it was traditional – and politically expedient – for lawmakers to hide behind governors’ spending plans.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

You might not know the name James Hong but you know the face and some of the roles he has played.  I was watching CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend and learned more.  The 92 year-old character actor (he’s been an actor for 68 years) says he’s probably the only living person who’s worked with Groucho Marx.

Garey took his mom, Aggie, back to her home in Alabama this morning.  She has been staying with us for the past three weeks.  Her dog, Angel, passed away right before Christmas, and since Aggie lives by herself, she was very lonely.  We went to see her over the New Year weekend and convinced her to come back home with us to stay for a while.

Jarrod Jacobs: "God's Rules Have Reasons"

When we read through the book of Leviticus, we see God mandating what is necessary to do in the various sacrifices and offerings that are brought to Him. He also talks about what was to be done with the entrails, skin, dung, and other aspects of the animals that people tend to forget when reading about sacrifices (Lev. 4:11-12, 8:17, 9:11, 16:27-28; Num. 19:1-10).

Jim Waters: Go big or go home: The best kind of school choice policy?

In a version of “go big or go home,” the West Virginia legislature last year withstood teachers’ protests and union-forced strikes to pass the nation’s most inclusive Education Savings Accounts (ESA) policy after not being able to get through a smaller ESA program just two years earlier.

Enough Mountain State voters disapproved of the sharp-elbow tactics displayed by the teachers’ unions and their far-left allies during the past couple of years to elect lawmakers who support school choice policy.

“Respect Yourself” was written by Luther Ingram and Mack Rice.  The song was originally recorded and released by The Staples Singers.  It was released in 1971 off their album Be Altitude.  The Staple Singers’ version peaked at #12 on the Hot 100, #2 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and is one of the groups most recognizable hits.  In 2002, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and, in 2010, it was ranked #468 on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 greatest songs of all time.  Bruce Willis (yes, THAT Bruce Willis) took his version of the song to #5 in the U.S., #7 in the

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

January and February are my least favorite months. These months are made up of mostly cool to cold days, and the sky is often overcast. As a result, I stock up on specific supplies – not necessarily “groceries.” Although I appreciate a warm house, running water, food in the house, and television and Internet access, I need a few more things. My stockpile for January and February includes the following supplies.

Author and producer, Devon Franklin said, “The truth is, you and I are in control of only two things: how we prepare for what might happen, and how we respond to what just happened.  The moment when things actually happen belongs to God.”

Senator C.B. Embry's Legislative Update

Week 2

We extended the first week of the 2022 Regular Session into last weekend that allowed for the passage of time-sensitive legislation.  This week was, on the other hand, an abbreviated one—only four days—ahead of Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. This allows for a four-day weekend for members of the western Kentucky delegation who are eager to be home as rebuilding our communities continue.
