Cheryl Hughes: Ordinarily

I read something recently that changed the way I think about “ordinary.”  Carolyn Myss said, “People hold the idea of being ordinary in absolute contempt.  ‘Please, God, make me anything, but not ordinary.’  And because they do that, they feel like they should be protected from ordinary things.  So, when something happens like an illness, poverty, any kind of catastrophe, they think, I can’t believe this happened to me.”

Jarrod Jacobs: "Things Baptism Does"

Baptism is a subject that deserves our study and obedience. It is a Bible subject that is discussed often in the New Testament. What does baptism do for man? What purpose does it serve?

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

“Fever” was originally recorded by Willie John.  His version sold a million copies.  But it was jazz singer Peggy Lee, in 1958, who radically reinvented “Fever” and turned it into the steamy track we know it to be.

Cheryl Hughes: Going Green

I had one of those dreams again.  The dreams that place me in circumstances beyond my control.  The scenario isn’t always the same, except for the restaurant scenes.  There is always a restaurant scene.  I am always the only waitress who is working.  I’m waiting on five tables at once—always five.  The other wait staff is talking and laughing.  I don’t ask for help.  I wait for them to offer, but they never do.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Lay His Hand...Upon His Offering"

The worship of the Old Testament was certainly a “hands-on” religion! Beginning in Leviticus three, God tells a person to “lay his hand” on the animal to be sacrificed before dealing the death-blow (Lev. 3:2, 8, 13 4:4, 24, 29, 33). Reading these passages made me pause and ask why God thought that necessary.

Jim Waters: ‘Double jeopardy’ tax policy: Fix it or end it

With an enormous surplus of funds rolling into state coffers and a wad of COVID-relief dollars on the way, protecting Kentuckians from a huge tax increase when they show up at the county clerk’s office to renew their vehicle registrations this year should be low-hanging fruit on the General Assembly’s tree.

It wouldn’t be the first time attempts have been made in Frankfort to deal with the hated vehicle-usage tax, which Kentuckians are forced to pay during their birthday months – of all times – to register their vehicles.

Have you ever wondered how the name Corleone came to be in The Godfather movies? Al Pacino’s father was born in Corleone, Italy.  (LSUG.  For my fellow Yellowstone fans, the actress who plays Teeter, Jen Landon, is the daughter of the late Michael Landon from his second marriage.

Senator C.B. Embry's Legislative Update

Week 4

To my dear friends,

First, I would like to begin by welcoming Oldham, Trimble and Jefferson Counties to the 6th district.

We have officially crossed the one-quarter mark of the 60-day 2022 Regular Session and I have a few high points I’d like to share.

Cheryl Hughes: Nature for Sale

“We have a fortune lying around in our front yard,” I told Garey one morning, as I held up a small stick for him to examine.

               “What is that?” he asked.

               “It’s a stick,” I said.

“I know it’s a stick,” he said, “but why is it worth a fortune?”

“It belongs to a six-stick set that came in a bag of toys I got the kittens for Christmas,” I explained.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Sin Ruins Everything!"

Nadab and Abihu (Lev. 10) get much attention from Bible students because they are noted as doing something without God’s authority. Sadly, their choice ended their lives! Their sin might have seemed “harmless” or without consequence, but we see that this sin had dire and immediate consequences! Yes, sin ruins everything it touches (Ecc. 9:18b)! Leviticus 10 teaches this loud and clear!
