Phil's Philosophy by D.P. Kinkade (with contributions by Taylor & Drake Kinkade)

FALSE START:  Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little to my name to call my own, besides youth and vigor and the ill-conceived wisdom of knowing all there is to know, which almost invariably accompanies youth; I set out on a journey.

Now that our granddaughter, Sabria, and her mom have moved out of our house, it’s a real treat when she comes to visit.  Garey and I have learned that it’s no use planning anything, because she is going to latch on to some idea that comes to her mind, and we will all be going along for the ride.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Did Paul Condone Alcohol?”

In the continued discussions about alcohol and what the Bible allows, it is good for us to walk through the New Testament and see what God said about this subject. The apostle Paul, who wrote the majority of the New Testament, condemned the use of alcohol in his writings. For example, the New Testament says drunkenness will lead us to Hell. This is not my opinion. Rather, these are the words of the inspired apostle Paul (I Cor. 14:37). Read Galatians 5:19-21 as well as I Corinthians 6:9-11.

I may be the only one in our region who didn’t know this: National Senior Citizens Day is August 21. It’s an observance, not a holiday. In 1988, former President Ronald Reagan declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day. He wanted to honor senior citizens who had made contributions in their communities and to increase awareness of social, health, and economic issues affecting them (http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/senior-citizens-day). What a nice idea.

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

One time first wife Bett and I were at a funeral.  This old guy behind us kept talking out loud.  When Bett and I got home I said to her, “I’m going to get you a low-caliber pistol, and if I ever talk out loud at a funeral, I want you to sting me in the foot with it.”

Cheryl Hughes: Information Overload

On Wednesday night of last week, our granddaughter, Sabria, wanted to spend the night, which meant I had to take her to school the next morning (she just started kindergarten).  I called her mom, Natalie, to see where I was supposed to drop Sabria off the next morning.  Natalie said she knew where to pick her up, but she was unsure if that was the same place to drop her off, because she hadn’t yet dropped Sabria off at school, since she rode the bus each morning.

Jarrod Jacobs: “What Is Your Life?”

In James 4:13-15, James asks the question, “For what is your life?” He answers by comparing life to a vapor or a mist that “appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.” Our lives are like that, aren’t they? They are brief at their longest. It seems we are only on this earth for a moment and then are bound for eternity. Thus, James’ question is a good one to ask ourselves. “What is your life?” Let the Bible answer.

DYING TO LIVE- Years ago, right around the time when I was first diagnosed with cancer, there was a song that came out which for me personally, brought loads of comfort. It was almost as if someone was following me around and taking notes, then decided to put my story to music. The song is called – live like you were dying. The song speaks of a man being in his early 40's with a lot of life before him when a single moment came that changed everything. Boy can I identify with that situation; the moment when mortality gives you a real wake-up call.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

As I’ve mentioned before, my daughters and I have taken advantage of the warm weather to improve our health. It’s common for any one of them to text the rest of us a motivational picture and/or a positive quote. These messages encourage us to continue working to reach our health goals. Pinterest is a great source of information for this purpose.
