DON LOCKE: Lookin' Thru Bifocals

How did we get the King James version of the Bible?

Before 1611 the average blue-collar person in England could not read from Hebrew (Old Testament) or Greek (New Testament) manuscripts.

So, in 1603 when King James I was on his way to be crowned king, he was presented with a petition by English clergy of Puritan convictions.  We want a Bible the average person on the street can read.

Cheryl Hughes: Crafty

One afternoon, my granddaughter, Sabria, overheard me tell her mom, Natalie, that I was shopping for a new kitchen table.  The old one suffers from the effects of a gazillion crafts and science experiments performed upon its surface.  It is marred, scratched and scarred from all the cutting, gluing, painting and candle-making that have taken place there over the past 30 years.  I told Nat I was thinking about replacing it with a bar-height table with matching bar stools.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Feigned Words”

When Peter spoke of the false teachers (II Pet. 2:1), he warned that these people would “with feigned words make merchandise of you” (v. 3). This warning concerning false teachers has been consistent since the gospel was first preached! Jesus and Paul warned about false teachers on several occasions (Matt. 7:15; Acts 20:29-30; Col. 2:8).

OPINION: Perception vs. Reality diverge on coronavirus prevalence

OUT ON A LIMB: By John Embry

I have been confused for a while now, which will come as no surprise to my wife.  When the coronavirus came to America courtesy of Wuhan, China, politicians went into overdrive to shut down the economy and impose various restrictive measures on its citizens - all in the name of safety of course.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Warm weather months provide a great opportunity for children to play. Unfortunately, many summer activities are not available this year. Ten easy ways to entertain children are listed below.

-Active Outdoor Games – Active outdoor games might not be too popular in late July, but kids don’t usually mind the heat – especially in the evening. The traditional games, like dodge ball, kick ball, 4 square and flashlight tag, allow children to be active and have fun. These games might be timed games, minimizing exposure to bug bites, heat and exhaustion.

Cheryl Hughes: Life's Pressing Questions

My stepmom, who will be 88 in the fall, is currently staying with my stepsister, Lorrie, at her home in eastern Kentucky.  She has been there since the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus.  Mom normally lives by herself in Taylorsville, but Lorrie felt she would be safer with her until the pandemic is a bit more under control.  My brothers and sisters and I agree.

Jarrod Jacobs: Always In Remembrance

God is a God who likes to remind us of things. He knows that humans are forgetful, and so we read of numerous times when He had men establish memorials. Sometimes, it was when they won a battle, or when some miracle occurred like the crossing of the Jordan River. In the New Testament, Christ established a memorial when He instituted His Supper (Matt. 26:26-29)!
