Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Outdoor options for the holiday break

The author releases a rainbow trout caught in a deep run from Meade County’s Otter Creek in late December two years ago. The catch and release trout season is one of several fun options for outdoors enthusiasts with time off from work during the holiday season.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – After the stress, bustle and eventual enjoyment of Christmas passes, many Kentuckians still have several days off from work. After a belly full of bowl games, board games, card games and sweets, boredom and restlessness can set in for outdoors enthusiasts.

Lady Bears improving with each game.

The Butler County Lady Bears had a slow start to the season but are showing improvement with each game.  They have been plagued with injuries as Allie Easley is still out with a shoulder injury and Karson Inscoe is back but still having some knee issues. Despite dropping their first few games of the season, the Butler County Lady Bears are 1-4 on the early season.

Morgantown Elementary Archery

Medal winners

The MES Archery Team Traveled to the Warren East Middle/High School Raider Shoot on Saturday, Dec 5th.  Morgantown Elementary received 2nd place for Elementary Team Score. MES had 5 archers win 1st place medals. Archers that attended with their finish:

Braydon Tomes – 1st place 3rd grade boys – 2nd place elementary boy overall (out of 49)

Sally Butler – 1st place 4th grade girls – 1st place elementary girl overall (out of 27)

Ryleigh White – 1st place 3rd grade girls – 2nd place elementary girl overall (out of 27)

Logan Thompson – 1st place 2nd grade boys

Bears open season 2-1 with wins over Thomas Nelson and Todd

Despite dropping their first game of the season, the Butler County Bears have won a pair of contests to improve to 2-1 on the early season.  The Bears will be on the road tonight - Friday, December 11 - at Hancock County for a Third Region match-up with the Hornets.

BCMS Lady Bears 8th Grade Night

The Butler County Middle School girls' basketball season came to close last weekend at the Green River Valley Conference tournament at Edmonson County.  The Lady Bears 8th grade team defeated Ohio County on Friday night but fell to host Edmonson County on Saturday to end the season.  The 7th grade team lost to Muhlenberg South on Friday night. 

The 2015 Lady Bears had six 8th graders on the team.  They are Kailie Beasley, Shalyn Bratcher, Hannah Chaney, Emma Easley, Ashley Thacker, and Jacie Ward.

PREP BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Lady Bears, Bears ready for the hardwood

BCHS Lady Bears Basketball 2015-16

With the kickoff of the 2015-16 high school basketball season this week, both Butler County squads are hoping to improve on their 2014-15 results. 
The Butler County Lady Bears finished up at 5-22, while the Bears wrapped last season with an 8-19 mark.  Both teams had significant lossess to graduation but have returning players poised to step up and play key roles this season.

MES Archery Team travels to Hancock County

Morgantown Elementary's Archery team is off to a great start.  The team is coached by Shaun White and team members include: Cayden Southerland, Brady Jones, Layton Phelps, Hailey Pierson, Ryleigh White, Reese Hudnall, Andrew Gill, Sally Butler, Lydia Wilcox, and Wiley House.
They traveled to Hancock County on November 21st,for a tournament.

Henderson up for Homers Heisman

Butler County High School standout quarterback Rex Henderson is one of four players up for the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine of Owensboro/Homers Radio Heisman Award.  Henderson, a junior nominee for the award, was named the October Player of the Month by Homers' Radio, which covers high school sports in Daviess and surrounding counties.  

Henderson led Butler County to a 9-3 overall record before the Bears fell to Mayfield in the second round of the playoffs.

Meet the Team Night for B.C.H. S. Basketball

The Butler County High School basketball program held its annual Meet the Team Night on Friday, November 20, at the B.C.H.S.  A nice crowd turned out to get their first look at both the Bears' and Lady Bears' basketball squads for the upcoming 2015-16 season.

The event first featured the introduction of the B.C.H.S. cheerleaders, which was done by cheer coach Shelby Baseheart. Assistant coaches are Katie Flener and Lisa Rhoades.
