Cheryl Hughes: Farm Talk

Roasneers.  That’s what my parents called corn on the cob.  That’s also what Garey’s parents called corn on the cob.  The term probably comes from the turn of the century tradition of roasting ears of corn over the fire, hence roasted ears became roasneers.  That’s just conjecture.  I couldn’t find any documentation of such.

I was in Alabama over the weekend, and like it often does, the talk turned to the past.  Charlotte, Garey’s sister, and Garey added up how many acres of corn they hoed out every summer.

Representative Steve Sheldon: Legislative Update

With the first full month of the interim behind us, I would like to share an update on this week’s interim joint committee meetings. Remember, these committees are meeting to learn more about the issues we will likely consider during the next session, as well as to oversee how the legislation we have already passed is being implemented.

Jarrod Jacobs: Christ Changes Us

When reading the New Testament, I am impressed with how Christ changes people’s lives. For example, when Christ chose twelve men to be His apostles, He told some: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19-21). He later would turn these fishermen into mountain climbers (Matt. 17:1)! Christ also took Peter, a fisherman, and said He expected him to become a spiritual shepherd (Jn. 21:15-17).

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Before I get into my column for this week, there are a couple of things I left out of my US Festival column.  The reason is there was a part two to the festival that I recorded.  I realized after I wrote and sent my column that I never watched part tw

Cheryl Hughes: Before All This

Recently, one of my friends told me that his mom, who has been in an assisted living facility for the past two years, said when she passes, she doesn’t want the new pastor at her church to conduct her funeral service.  She wants the pastor who served at her church for years, before moving on to pastor another church in another state.  “I want someone who knew me before all this,” she said, referring to the frustration, irritability and confusion that comes over her in waves, due to her age and living arrangements.

Jarrod Jacobs: Just Like You?

What if you knew of people who were trying to be just like you? What if folks wanted to dress like you, act like you, talk like you, be employed at the same place, live in the same town you live in, etc.? What would you think of people like that? Do you think this would be a wise thing for folks to do? Would you encourage people in this pursuit? Why or why not?

Jim Waters: The Unfairness of it All

The political left claims “fairness” as its issue du jour.

Considering Gov. Andy Beshear’s decision to dangle $1,500 between couch potatoes and their TVs to entice tens of thousands of Kentuckians remaining unemployed-by-choice to return to work as many of their fellow citizens have, one wonders if this darling of political progressives even supports “fairness,” at least in the economic realm.
