Jarrod Jacobs: Sin's Blinding Touch

Pride touched Naaman, the Syrian general, and made him revolt at Elisha’s command to dip seven times in Jordan (II Kings 5:11-12).

Self-Righteousness touched the Pharisee and blinded him to his own corruption and the publican’s virtues (Lk. 11:12).

Worldly Ambitions touched the eyes of the young ruler and blacked out the possibility of an eternal crown (Lk. 18:23).

Love Of This Present World touched the heart of Demas and led him away from Paul and a faithful life (II Tim. 4:10).

Cheryl Hughes: Home Schooled

This week on NPR, there were two guests questioning how far behind our children were going to be academically because of the gaps in their education due to the pandemic.  I know they have a valid point.  There are gaps, there will be more gaps and yes, that concerns me; however, there are other things our children have learned they wouldn’t have learned if they hadn’t gone through the pandemic.  Whether we signed on for the job or not, most of our kids were home schooled while the brick-and-mortar versions were closed down.  They were taught by immediate family and extende

Jim Waters: Could constitutional amendment help balance power in Frankfort?

Such flippant dismissal of local decision-making by this governor and his ideologically aligned, unelected bureaucrats is unacceptable, if unsurprising.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

This week, I wrap up my top summer movies series.  We pick up at 2012 where the top grossing film was The Avengers.  Released May 4, 2012, the movie netted $1.5 billion at the box office globally with a production budget of $220 million.  The Avengers was the culmination of four years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first phase.  Today, those first few movies seem like an experiment, as Marvel has certainly discovered what has worked in more recent years.  Compared to “Endgame”, the first Avengers movie may seem like child’s play.  But at the time, it was a truly impressive achievement.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Boating accidents, much like car wrecks, can be life changing. Recently, our family lost my niece, Jennifer, in a boating accident. She was one of the good ones: loving, kind, generous, forgiving, a part of the glue that held our family together. Jennifer left behind her husband, son and daughter, father and mother, grandmother, siblings and in-laws, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as a host of beloved friends. She is missed.

Senator C.B. Embry: "Please Consider the Vaccine"

FRANKFORT, Ky. (August 17, 2021) – The following is a letter to the editor from Senator C.B. Embry (R-Morgantown) encouraging Kentuckians to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Recent reports have shown an increase in COVID-19 cases within our region, especially among unvaccinated ones. While there is still much to learn about the Delta variant, we are certain that the vaccine is safe and effective.

Cheryl Hughes: Protect and Preserve

It’s that time of year again.  You know the time.  It’s the time when you call your friend, Carol, and ask, “Do you need some tomatoes?  I have some Romas, and they make great salsa.”  And she asks, “How much do you want for them?”  And you say, “I don’t want anything for them, just come get them before I set fire to the field.”

She does come get them.  I don’t set fire to the field. Crisis averted.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Arrows In The Hand Of A Mighty Man"

David, the sweet psalmist of Israel (II Sam. 23:1), penned a song concerning the home in Psalm 127. He wrote, “As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them…” (Ps. 127:4-5). Let us focus upon the phrase from Psalm 127:4 and make applications to ourselves.

Jim Waters: The Mask Wars: Local Choice Better Than Frankfort's Coercion

“Then, we all laughed because we knew we could get in trouble for swearing, but the strength of our numbers would prevent any retribution.” –Stephen Chbosky, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”

Science Hill Independent School District Superintendent Jimmy Dyehouse did something all parents, administrators and local school board members should do in response to Gov. Andy Beshear’s latest executive order: speak up!
