Cheryl Hughes: Comfort of the Familiar

My husband, Garey, has a tee shirt that has been worn and washed so many times it’s threadbare.  There are at least fifty tiny holes along the neckband, and I look for the body of the shirt to let go and disintegrate into a heap upon the floor any day now.  That shirt is Garey’s go-to shirt for gardening in oppressive heat, the kind we had last week.  It is comfortable, and he depends on it.

Jarrod Jacobs: "I Am Not Bothering Anyone"

Often we find folks who justify their sinful behavior by saying, “I am not bothering anyone.” This excuse may sound thoughtful, but it is not. In fact, it is quite selfish to justify sin by saying, “I am not bothering anyone.” When we go to the Bible and study the nature of sin, we learn that when we commit sin, any sin, we “bother” others!

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

It’s time once again for another round of “Oh, you didn’t know”! For instance, Oh, you didn’t know that the Ray Charles classic “Hit The Road, Jack” was used as the theme song for the WB’s show Un-happily Ever After? The show, which aired for 100 episodes from January 11, 1995-May 23, 1999, for a total of five seasons.  The series, created by Ron Leavitt and Arthur Silver.

Letter to the Editor

Not many people go to work every day under constant threat of a dog attack – but USPS letter carriers do. On average, nearly 15 mail carriers per day are attacked.

Postal Service officials report that in 2020, over 5,800 letter carriers experienced dog bites or dog attacks. With deliveries every day, including Sundays and holidays, carriers continue to experience dog bites in urban, suburban and rural settings.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

I was looking for some information in Foxfire 3, one of a series of folklore-collection books that belonged to my late husband. In it, I came across a section entitled Summer and Fall Wild Plant Foods. Although I did not find what I was originally searching for, I found some interesting information, including how to make blackberry jelly as well as grape juice and how to entertain yourself while roasting hazelnuts.

Jarrod Jacobs: The Crucifixion Of Christ

The Bible speaks very matter-of-factly about the crucifixion of Christ. We know that this event was a matter of prophecy in the Old Testament (Gen. 3:15; Ps. 22; Isa. 53; Dan. 9:26). We also know that Christ alluded to this event, declaring that He would die by crucifixion (Matt. 16:21, 17:23, 20:19; Mk. 9:31, 10:34; Lk. 9:22, 18:31-33, 24:7). When the time came, the Holy Spirit inspired the writers to say simply: “They crucified him” (Matt. 27:35; Mk. 15:25; Lk. 23:33; Jn. 19:18).

Cheryl Hughes: Blue Mermaid

When my granddaughter, Sabria, was about three years old, she found a blue mermaid in a thrift shop.  It was purchased for her, and she carried it everywhere.  She slept with it and even played with it in the bathtub.  After bath time, I would squeeze as much water out of it as I could then hang it by the tail fin to dry.  Blue Mermaid was made from cloth and had blue yarn hair.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

“It’s All Over Now”.  No, that is not my sentiment after turning 42 last week.  It’s the first song in this week’s installment of my Under The Covers series.  The song was written by Bobby and Shirley Womack.  First released by the Valentinos featuring Bobby Womack, the song entered the Billboard chart on June 27, 1964, where it stayed

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Words of others or quotes can be helpful. Life’s experiences may cause us to relate to certain quotes. When facing a difficult path, encouraging and motivational quotes can give us strength. And people often use quotes as inspiration to start a new path, to stay positive, or to stay the course.

Thinking about how people relate to quotes, I asked friends and family, “What is your favorite quote?” Their responses are below, and some people listed two or more.

-God is good!

-A woman’s work is never done.

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Some folks march to a different drum.  But you knew that.

Barney Barnhart did.  It was told, at first, Barney slept in a coffin.  Not so.  Barney slept in a large wooden box coffins come in.  He bought it at a local funeral home.  Said it, “slept warm,” in the winter.
