Local Service: Honoring 70 Years

The Office of Magistrate or Commissioner is difficult to define. Perhaps it is because the offices do not get as much attention as those on a state and federal level. Maybe it’s because the titles come from a more antiquated time. Most likely, though, is because it is difficult to put a definition on an office that does so much.

Cheryl Hughes: Something from Something

Recently, a friend told me about a drive to get sewing machines to Afghani immigrants in the area.  The immigrants were willing and able to sew their own clothes but had escaped Afghanistan with only what they could carry.  I was reminded of something I had just read.  The article was referenced in a book called, LIGHT THE DARK, by Joe Fassler.

Jarrod Jacobs: “God Be Merciful To Me A Sinner”

Our title is found in Luke 18:13. In this text, we read a parable the Lord spoke to those who “trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others” (Lk. 18:9). This parable was about a Pharisee and publican (tax collector) who went to the Temple to pray to God (Lk. 18:10-13). The Pharisee spoke to God as if bragging about how great he was, but the publican simply said, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” Christ said that the publican was the one who was justified rather than the Pharisee (Lk. 18:14).

Letter to the Editor: World TB Day should be a wake up call

Thursday, March 24th was World Tuberculosis Day, commemorating the approximately 1.5 million people killed by the disease each year. In twenty years, global efforts to eradicate tuberculosis and other preventable diseases, led by groups like the Global Fund, have made enormous progress. The Global Fund alone has saved 44 million lives since 2002.

Cheryl Hughes: A Few Good Things Remain

Last week, I stayed with my stepmom for a few days.  She lives with my stepsister, Lorrie, in eastern Kentucky, but occasionally comes to Taylorsville to stay with my brothers—first one, then the other—in order to give Lorrie a break.

Jarrod Jacobs: "A Man After God's Own Heart"

The statement above is well-known to many. It comes from the words of Scripture found in I Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22. What made David a man after God’s own heart? The answer to this question is found in I Samuel 13:14. Can we possess those characteristics today? Let the Bible answer.
