Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

They shot to stardom decades ago with one hit after another.  CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Kelefa Sanneh says, “I remember seeing “Love Shack” on MTV and I was like “what is this”? The song certainly didn’t fit the mold of what mainstream radio played.  Mainstream caught on.

Recently, I saw a tee shirt that read: 90 Percent of Being Married is Yelling ‘What?’ From Other Rooms.  With Garey and me, it’s more like 95 percent.  Garey can’t hear, and I’m quickly getting there.  He and I often start conversations with, “I told you this before.”  In one of Garey’s more honest moments, he replied, “I probably just acted like I heard you, because I didn’t feel like yelling ‘what’ one more time.”  What could I say?  I’ve done that too.

Jarrod Jacobs: “What Name Would God Give You?”

Acts 4:36-37 records a very interesting event in the history of the Lord’s church. When certain ones gave money and possessions to supply the needs of the poor brethren in Jerusalem, one man, Joses, stood out.

What does the Word of God mean to you?  If it means everything to you then you must study it pretty often, right?!  In other words, we surely make time to read it, study it, meditate on it, research it, connect it to other passages,  and relate it to our lives. In John 6:66 when Jesus had challenged His disciples with the depth of understanding of who He was, many were not convinced and left Him. Jesus then asked the twelve if they would leave also. Peter in John 6:68 gave the only response anyone could:  “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.

The Hollywood Bowl, a music landmark, is celebrating its 100th birthday.  CBS Sunday Morning’s Luke Burbank says “if you’re looking for the perfect L.A. day, you’ll want to soak up the sun and play on the sand at one of its many beaches.  But for the perfect L.A. night, you’ll need to head about 20 miles inland for an evening under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl.  Nestled in one of Hollywood’s many canyons, this amphitheater has been the southern California destination for fans and performers for a century.

I’m keeping my friends’ dog, Mollie, while they are on tour.  My friends are musicians, and Mollie usually goes on the road with them, but they are headed to Europe for a few weeks, so Mollie is staying with me until they return.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Calling On The Name Of The Lord”

I am sure that our readers have heard people say words to the effect, “All you need to do is call upon the name of the Lord, and you can be saved.” Some will tell you to pray and say, “Lord, be merciful to me a sinner,” or similar things. This teaching is a misapplication of Romans 10:13. What does it mean to call upon the name of the Lord? (Space forbids us from printing Romans 10:13-17.

It may not seem like we are at times. But, we are. Blessed, that is. It takes perspective for us to realize in our lives that others hurt as much as we do, only in different ways. The Bible is clear to share with us that all of us encounter hardship as well as good things or blessings. And, sometimes our hardship can be the very thing we needed to get us closer to God just like Paul discussed in 2 Corinthians 12:10.

Back in the ‘70’s, the Doobie Brothers turned out their fair share of hits while selling out concerts coast to coast.  The Doobie Brothers are more than a little different: selling over 50 million albums over the last 50 years.  You can count on one hand, and maybe have a few fingers left over the number of bands who have had that kind of longevity.  While other members have come and gone over the years, Michael McDonald, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McPhee, the core four Doobie’s, feel fortunate to still be playing together.

Most of us have watched the rise of gasoline prices. It’s an unfortunate situation, hurting many. I have a friend who – when something unpleasant happens – will say, “It is what it is.” That is a fair assessment of gasoline prices.

Gasoline has not always been so important, but today it is very important. In 2015, Fuel Express posted “15 Fun Facts about Gasoline.” Some of those are listed below:
