Cheryl Hughes: Lesson in Happiness

My Uncle Phillip passed away in June.  I’ve mentioned him before in a couple of my columns.  He was happy.  I know that sounds like a simplistic description of a person’s character, but there are depths to that word—happy—that many of us will never reach.

Jarrod Jacobs: I Got Goggled

Almost everyone these days knows what Google is. Google is a search engine (and more) where someone can learn about almost anything on earth. “Google” began in 1996 as the research project of Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google’s mission statement is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

We “google” things when we want to learn about them, don’t we? In fact, to “google” something has become a part of our vernacular Thanks to search engines like Google, encyclopedias are almost unnecessary.

Green Valley Vision

It might be one of the most unusual and untrue statements in all of American society. It is found on our paper money, on our coins, on buildings, and on vehicle license plates. In fact, today as I was pulling into a lane of traffic I watched a big truck come across from the other side and came close to me, not far from hitting my car. It’s a good thing I was watching because he wasn’t.  I noticed his license plate included “In God we trust”.  Wow!  I sure didn’t trust him, and he was from Florida so he didn’t know our roads and turns.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

What do Vince Gill, Adam Lambert, Sammy Hagar and Brian Jones have in common? Are you asking who is Brian Jones? Sit back and I’ll tell you.  They all joined legendary bands after the ones they replaced either left the band or passed away.

Legislative Column: Representative Melinda Gibbons Prunty

BELTON, KY—On Thursday, July 14, every piece of legislation that passed during the 2022 General Assembly that did not have an emergency clause or is not tied up in court over lawsuits went into effect according to the “90 days after the end of session” rule. They are approximately one hundred in number, and I would like to share about a few of them.

Jim Waters: Inflation no reason to lose ground on pension progress

On the same day the American League beat the Senior Circuit in this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game again – it’s nine straight now – Jim Carroll, president of Kentucky Government Retirees, was again back in Frankfort with his hand out.

Carroll’s repetitive tune during his recent presentation to the Public Pension Oversight Board sounded much like the one he made last year, but this time as he and others in his corner think rising inflation adds momentum to their push for increasing benefits.

When you visit My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, you will see a picture of Stephen Foster on the wall.  You will see a statue of him on the grounds, as well.  If you take the tour, you will be told that he visited the house—previously known as the Federal Home—many times.

Jarrod Jacobs: “What Doth Hinder Me To Be Baptized?”

After Philip caught up to the Ethiopian eunuch, he taught him about Jesus (Acts 8:35). They came to some water, “And the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” (Acts 8:36). Friend, have you ever had someone ask you what is stopping you from being baptized? We want to look at some reasons why people are “hindered” today and then try to remove those hindrances. What reason(s) might one have for not being baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38)?

Applause for KY Senator Rand Paul

Standing up for liberty, freedom, and justice has to be difficult amidst the Washington D.C. quagmire. Yet, Senator Paul keeps the faith and keeps on truck’in. Running in the opposite direction of tyranny, Paul battles for our civil liberties.

“When the whole world is running towards a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.” -C.S. Lewis

The Brutal Killing continues. The resolve and spirit of the people of Ukraine remain strong despite the overwhelming odds from the Russians. President Zalenski has proven to be a formidable and passionate leader as opposed to his counterpart Putin who will be remembered for his vicious and evil and meaningless attacks on a country who did not provoke. Who did not deserve such terrible treatment.
