Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Those wonder years were wonderful, to be pure- but sometimes confusing to a youngster- but you’ve been there.
My very first coloring book was that of the Lone Ranger- before TV.  I heard him on the radio.  But, certain questions; questions like, “how dare sleep out on the open ground, on even in a cave and not get his clothes dirty?”  And more of a puzzlement, “Where does he go to the bathroom… does he use toilet paper... if so, does he carry it in his saddle bags?”

Cheryl Hughes: Covered

I’ve noticed there are particular things or themes, sometimes both, in children’s lives when they are very young.  For my daughter, Nikki, it was string and nets.  Nikki was forever tying string to things.  Often, I would have to take a detour through my dining room because she had tied the kitchen chairs together, and her toy horses were usually yoked together with whatever string or ribbon she found lying around.  At the time, it seemed like string was hanging from everything.

Letter to Editor: Where does the lottery money go?

Dear Editor,

Kentucky sells a lottery ticket every thirty-five seconds. Throngs of people, drawn by the promise of a 1.5 billion-dollar jackpot, rushed to buy tickets before the Powerball drawing earlier this month. Many perhaps justified their purchase by assuring themselves that the money they spent would go towards education. The Kentucky Lottery even encourages this line of thinking with their “Where the Money Goes” television advertisement, which features the slogan “Fueling Imagination, Funding Education.”

But does it really?

Jarrod Jacobs: “Questions About Alcohol Use”

When we oppose the sale of alcohol based upon Biblical truth, it is inevitable that some will try to justify the recreational use of alcohol by saying things like “God doesn’t condemn drinking, just getting drunk.” I do not question someone’s sincerity when this argument is made, but the statement is just not Biblically accurate. While there is no question that God condemns drunkenness (I Cor. 6:10; Gal. 5:21; I Cor. 5:11; etc.), the Bible also makes it clear that God wants us to stay away from alcohol from the start. For example, Proverbs 23:31 says don’t even look at the wine.

Some additional considerations regarding the alcohol vote:

I’ve read many of the opinions about the alcohol vote. I’m literally scratching my head. I consume alcohol, but I could care less if you legalize it. I would be in favor of “no,” just to avoid the turmoil. Why stir stuff up if there’s nothing to gain?

Senator C.B. Embry's Legislative Update: Week 3

Although week three of the General Assembly was short due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the inclement weather Friday, the Kentucky Senate passed significant bills and welcomed visitors who braved the snow in Frankfort.

On Tuesday we passed two of our priority bills: Senate Bill (SB) 4 and SB 10, both of which I proudly cosponsored. SB 4 would require those seeking an abortion to have a face-to-face, in-person counseling session with a physician 24 hours prior to the procedure. This effort to promote the rights of the unborn passed with bipartisan support.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Monday, another music legend was lost when Eagles’ founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey passed away at 67 years of age from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcer ulcerative colitis and pneumonia while recovering from intestinal surgery. During the ‘70’s, Frey played guitar, piano and keyboards.  Alongside Don Henley, Frey was one of the primary singers of the Eagles.  He sang lead vocals on “Take It Easy”, “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, “Tequila Sunrise”, “Already Gone”, “Lyin’ Eyes”, “New Kid in Town” and “Heartache Tonight”.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Last week, President Obama gave his eighth and final State of the Union Address. His remarks focused on four areas: providing economic opportunity, using technology to overcome challenges, ensuring our safety without policing the world, and making politics reflect what’s best in us. Advancement in these areas would improve our society.
