Letter to Editor:Conservation Program Restores Wildlife; Helps Farmers Care for Land, Air, Water

The modern environmental conservation movement is one that has brought awareness and conservation practices to many urban audiences.  To some, it probably seems like a recent shift in American thinking.
But American farmers and ranchers throughout rural and tribal lands were the original conservationists, wasting nothing and preserving as much as possible.  And in recent decades, they’ve produced some amazing results that everyone should know about as a result of the USDA Conservation Reserve Program, or CRP.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Our family has recently welcomed a new member. My great niece joined our family on January 29th. Yes, she is healthy, beautiful and well loved. It’s amazing how love of family can multiply!

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

There were times on the American Frontier a rider would tell how he dived from his saddle an instant before a bullet or an arrow struck a tree limb close beside his ear.
According to the dictionary the word, intuition, is described as the ability to see or to know things without our conscious reasoning over and above our commonly known five senses.
Probably we’ve all sensed someone looking at us, only to look up and see a person immediately turn his or her head.

Cheryl Hughes: The Way You Play the Game

Did you watch this year’s Super Bowl between the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos?  It was one of the most disappointing games I have ever watched in my life…and my team (the Broncos) won.  Before I go on, I need to offer a few disclaimers: One, I am not an expert on football; Two, I can’t quote stats or percentages or any other measurement of a player’s or team’s viability (the one exception being that Peyton Manning holds the record for most passing touchdowns, just edging out Brett Favre); and Three, I do not have enough knowledge of the game to argue the finer points of a defens

Jarrod Jacobs: The Making Of Many Books

Long ago, Solomon said, “And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecc. 12:12). Solomon’s words ring true today. When we think of all the books in existence on this earth, the sheer volume is staggering! If we could calculate all books that have ever been written, surely it would be an amazingly high number. Perhaps one reason why there are so many books in existence is because many books have wrong information in them!

Life Hacks!
The idea for this column came from an episode of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert I’d watched a week or so ago.  He did this skit called Late Show Life Hacks.  That got me thinking that I should do something like that.  I thought of two right off the bat.  1) go to bed earlier.  This might sound like a no-brainer but hear me out.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Next Sunday is Valentine’s Day, and since I usually cook Sunday lunch for my family, I thought I’d make strawberry cake for dessert that day – a nod to the day of red and pink. Although Valentine’s Day is a day to show our love, it has been commercialized. Americans spend quite a bit of money on cards and gifts.

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Dislike and hate are two different things.  In my 82 years I have known people whom I have disliked, but I desire to think dislike is where it ended.  It was not hate I think.  However, I have known some people I have either hated, or have come pretty close.  In my child-like mind I hated my fifth-grade history teacher.  She treated me shabbily….

Cheryl Hughes: Rabbit Dog

My daughter, Nikki, has a pet rabbit—nothing unusual about that.  The rabbit’s name is Bobby—common enough name for a rabbit.  Bobby thinks he’s a dog.  Now, that is a bit unusual.  Nikki has two dogs, but it is not their influence that has Bobby thinking he’s a dog.  Bobby’s canine bent came long before Nikki met him.
