Jarrod Jacobs: Lying Lips Are An Abomination

Abraham Lincoln once said, “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar.” George Washington was quoted as saying, “I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” In a time in which lying to one another (and to ourselves) seems to be epidemic, let us see what God says about lying.

Letter to Editor: Mudd for Judge

Dear Editor,

I have heard a lot of talk about the character of both men in this election, I am writing this on the behalf of Mark Mudd. Jacob (Mark’s son) and I have been best friend our entire lives. I have spent almost as much time in Mark’s House as I have spent in my own. I know Mark Mudd, I know his family, there is none better to lead this county. He is honest, fair, trustworthy, and servant-hearted and he values respect. Mark has held to these principles as long as I have known him.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I’m going to table my fast facts column this week to tell you about where I went last Friday night.  I went with some fellow church members to the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular in Iroquois Park in Louisville.  From celebrity faces, wizards, fairytales, Chinese dragons and scary pickled pumpkins, there were pumpkins carved of anything and anyone you can think of.

I don’t normally voice my opinion on politics because I think it’s a private matter of whom you vote for and why.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

October is the beginning of my comfort-food season. The following recipes meet that criteria. Some of the recipes have been frequently used, and some of them are new to me. Welcome back, comfort-food season!

My Sister’s Taco Soup

2 lb. ground beef or pork (I use sausage.)

1 large can diced tomatoes

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

Sometimes I fail to catch certain things the first time around…note-worthy things.

Recently I watched a rerun of Dan Rather interviewing Country Music Star Charlie Daniels.  I’ve always admired Charlie, not just his music, but the man himself.

Little things, an attitude, define us.  Charlie grew up in North Carolina in about the same era as I did in Kentucky.

Cheryl Hughes: One Bottle of Aspirin and 57 Cents

One day, I was reading a book about children from different cultures to my granddaughter, Sabria.  In the book, a little girl from India made the statement, “Rice is the most popular food in the world.”

Sabria shook her head in disagreement, “No it isn’t,” she said, “McDonalds is.”

Jarrod Jacobs: A Memorial For A Sacrificial Woman

In the life of Christ, we find a time when a woman poured expensive ointment on Jesus (Matt. 26:7). Mary, Lazarus’ sister, is the one who did this (Jn. 12:3). As this ointment was poured upon Christ, Matthew says “his disciples” complained, and John gets more specific, naming Judas as one who complained that it could have been “sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor” (Jn. 12:5).

Last week, I was scrolling stories on my msn page and came across a story that caught my eye.  The title was 50 Facts so Interesting They’ll Crush Your Boredom.  Everybody needs their boredom crushed every now and again, right? In that case, settle in.
