Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

I’m going to table my fast facts column this week to tell you about where I went last Friday night.  I went with some fellow church members to the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular in Iroquois Park in Louisville.  From celebrity faces, wizards, fairytales, Chinese dragons and scary pickled pumpkins, there were pumpkins carved of anything and anyone you can think of.

It was a dark and stormy night.  It really wasn’t but that’s how you start a good Halloween story, right? There were mini pumpkins on the roof, pumpkins on posts, stumps, pumpkins carved in the shape of historical figures, presidents and certain college basketball coaches.

The Jack O Lantern Spectacular itself began in Oxford, Massachusetts in 1988.  The Louisville event is celebrating its 6th year in 2018, is held in Iroquois Park with 5,000 carved pumpkins lining a 1/3-mile walking trail, illuminated at night as an “art show”.

The show runs daily from dusk(approximately 7;15 pm) to 11 pm during the week(Sunday-Thursday), and closes at midnight on Friday and Saturday.  Box office opens nightly at 6 pm and closes at 10:59Sunday through Thursday and 11:59 on Friday and Saturday.  The trail stays open until the last ticket sold at the box office is scanned at the entrance to the trail.  The last night of the Jack O Lantern Spectacular is November 4.
