Cheryl Hughes: Leap of Faith

Sometimes in life, you just have to take a chance, even if it’s just a little chance.  You have to look at a situation, weigh the pros and cons then decide yea or nay.  The same is true when it comes to investments.  I think it was Dave Ramsey who said, “If you don’t tell your money what to do, it will leave you and go to somebody who will tell it what to do.”

Jarrod Jacobs: Is One Church As Good As Another?

Perhaps the most common attitude among religious people is the attitude that one church is as good as another.

Don Locke: Lookin Thru Bifocals

It’s always good to start with Jesus first — one can’t go wrong that way.

Jesus gives us calm of the soul.  But first to experience this, we must empty our souls of self, (I, me, my).

When the angel of the Lord helped Lot’s family escape the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, they were warned “not to look back” upon the wickedness of those cities.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

During a visit to my sister and brothers-in-law to watch the NCAA Tournament this past weekend, I got inspired.  She was sitting in the floor and converting her CD’s to Spotify playlists.  That got the wheels turning.  I have quite a lot of CD’s both upstairs and down.  I thought, “why not add those to my phone? That way I could(hopefully) sell the cd’s”.  I say “hopefully” because, there aren’t many(if any) places who take cd’s anymore.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

With spring’s onset, I’ve been reading about early spring outdoor exercise, home owner checklists, and yard and garden preparation. As Leo Tolstoy said, “Spring is the time of plans and projects” (https://www.countryliving.com/life/g3077/spring-quotes/?slide=12). These readings have caused me to make a rather long spring to-do list.

Cheryl Hughes: Diversity Training

One day at work, one of our co-op guys made a questionable observation about one of our customers, who happened to come from a different ethnic background than our guy did.  “I need to take you to Galveston, Texas, for some diversity training,” I said.

Jarrod Jacobs: "Except The Lord Build The House"

About 1000 years before Christ, David wrote, “Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it…” (Ps. 127:1). These words are just as true today as they were when they were penned. Unless the Lord is building the house, (i.e., one’s family) the efforts of men are in vain.

Rep. Steve Sheldon Legislative Update

General Assembly Sends Bills to Governor as One Day Remains In 2019 Regular Session-Members of the House finished business and walked off the floor late into the night on March 14. Since it is late in the session, the majority of the bills we considered this week were from the Senate, or House bills that were amended in the Senate with changes that had to be agreed on by the House.

Cowboy actor Gene Autry was known mostly for his cowboy songs.  However, he once said, “I can make more money out of a country song, or novelty song than I can cowboy songs.”  Hence we had “Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer” and “Peter Cottontail” — both sold millions.

As for country songs, “Be Honest With Me” was a top country seller for Gene.  Also, “You’re the Only Star in My Blue Heaven.”

By the same token western writer, Louis L’Amour, maintains that gunfighter novels sell better for him than real cowboy stories.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Once upon a time, I did a piece on origins of certain phrases people say all the time.  Most of the time they say these things without even realizing it.  I once asked my dad what that meant or where it came from.  He didn’t know.  That got me wondering what certain sayings mean.
