Many of us remember being offered “second chances” as children. Little children play games, and sometimes say, “do-over!” I think about second chances when using that beloved “delete” key that is attached to my computer! In fact, computers have an option called “undo” where we can go back to an earlier version of our document. In many aspects of life, it seems we can have second chances.

I’m picky when it comes to watching movies — I seldom watch new movies.  I do notice little things in the old movies that are not exactly right... even though there is not as much vulgarity in the old pictures.  That’s a plus.  

One of the first movie no-nos that comes to mind has to do with the Old Army Horse Cavalry, not the horse particularly, but the horse’s saddle.  

The cavalry officer rode a different saddle than that of the enlisted man.  The officer’s saddle was larger, more comfortable, and better made. 

As The Tennessean reported on April 5th, NASCAR legend and Owensboro, Kentucky’s own Darrell Waltrip announced his retirement after 19 years in the FOX broadcast booth.  With his homespun humor and signature “Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let’s go racin’, boys”, DW has cemented himself and set himself aside as a one of a kind announcer.  It’s one thing to have one long, distinguished career.  Waltrip has had two parts.  

Our south central Kentucky landscape is absolutely beautiful right now. I am enjoying the varied greens across the fields and in the trees. Spring flowers are showing off, too. Considering springs past, I believe I have looked forward to this spring more than any other. I am enjoying the beauty of the landscape, the warmer weather and the longer days. 

Wondering what others like about spring, I asked friends and family: “What about spring are you enjoying?” Their responses are below:

Last Sunday, I went to visit my Aunt Della and Uncle Curtis.  They live in Meade County, near Brandenburg.  As a child, I visited their home many times during summer break.  Their children, Barb, Deb and Steve, were my favorite cousins.  It was during one of those visits that I had my infamous run-in with the bottle of exploding rotten tomatoes, and the ensuing scrubbing of my body an

            Abraham Lincoln once said, “No man has a good enough memory to make a successful liar.” George Washington was quoted as saying, “I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” In a time in which lying to one another (and to ourselves) is in epidemic proportions, let us see what God says about lying.

IRREGARDLESS-If you did not sleep through all your English classes or if you are more like me instead, you developed a love for reading and a fondness for words, in spite of what they did to you at school, instead of because of it, then you will recognize that the word I used as a header to this column is what is known as a -non standard- word.

I’ve said before, good stories can pop-up just about anywhere; on tv.

Recently I was watching an episode of a program called, “The Flyboys.”  It is about old fighter airplanes of the era in World War I, and the young pilots that flew them.

The planes were bi-wingers, held together with little more than spit and bailing wire, covered with a cotton material, sprayed with a liquid compound similar to what we today know as crazy glue.

As spring flowers bloom, I’ve been researching the care of three plants: the orchid, the violet, and the peony. I love flowers and want to give mine good care.

The final week of the 153rd regular session of the Kentucky General Assembly saw the ceremonial signing of a sweeping measure to enhance school safety that is widely considered many lawmakers’ highest-priority bill of the year.

The School Safety and Resiliency Act, or Senate Bill 1, was among more than 200 bills that had passed by the time the 30-workingday session ended this evening. I was proud to co-sponsor this momentous piece of legislation.
