2nd District Fire Department February Board Meeting

On Thursday evening, the 23rd of February at 6:00 p.m., the 2nd District Volunteer Fire Department Board met for its regular monthly meeting at the firehouse. The meeting was called to order by President Fred Tate. Following was a prayer and the pledge to the U.S. flag. After calling the meeting to order, President Tate called for presentations to the board. Second District Magistrate, Johnny Tuck, presented a check to the board in the amount of $10,000. This money is the yearly allotment that each fire department receives for running its department.

Spring Playschool

The Butler County Child Development classes will conduct a Playschool for preschool children.  The days will be Mondays for 2 ½ and 3 year-olds, Thursdays for 4 year-olds and Fridays for 5 year-olds; however, we are willing to work with parents on scheduling.  Children who are presently enrolled in kindergarten are not eligible to attend.  All children must be potty-trained.

If you wish to submit your child’s name, please call 526-2204 (BCHS) between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  The deadline for enrolling children in Playschool is Thursday, March 22.

2nd District Fire Department holds annual Chili Supper and Rook Tournament

Members of the Davis Crossroads community came out to the 2nd District Fire Department on Saturday night for the annual Chili Supper and Rook Tournament fundraiser. The firehouse was packed full of people eager to get a bite to eat and play some cards all for a good cause. So many people turned out that they had to bring out more tables and chairs.

Cooper qualifies for state Geo Bee

Annabelle Cooper, who won the school-wide Geography Bee in December, has qualified to represent the Butler County School District at the state level of the National Geographic Society's Geographic Bee on Friday, March 30 at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center on the campus of Western Kentucky University.  One winner from each state and territory will advance to the national competition held May 22-24 at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C.

$1500 Scholarships Available from Community Action of Southern KY

Community Action of Southern Kentucky is accepting applications for a $1,500 Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Scholarship.  The CSBG Scholarship helps provide training or retraining required for the 10-County job market.  The CSBG Scholarship is open to income-eligible individuals wanting to return to school OR continue their education.  Scholarship benefits can be applied to fees, tuition, or textbooks at a college/university, vocational/technical school, or trade/professional program.

Grand opening for new quilt gallery at Kentucky Museum

The Kentucky Museum will celebrate the grand opening for the Richardson Quilt Gallery, WKU’s latest permanent exhibition, on February 24.

The gallery will include two dozen quilts and historic textile samples collected by Elizabeth Richardson and donated by her daughter June McGuyer. “The acquisition of the Richardson Collection enhances the stature of the Museum as a leading Kentucky institution for the study of quilts and quilt making,” said Sandy Staebell, Museum Collections Curator.

A Grateful Neighborhood

Employees of Morgantown Utilities worked Tuesday afternoon on South Tyler Street to perhaps finally repair a water leak that has eluded the best efforts of workers and sensitive detection equipment.

On frigid mornings a thin layer of ice would form near the top of the rear drive leading to El Rodeo Restaurant. “This time we found a leak, fixed it, and hope this takes care of the problem,” said Randall Gaskey, Morgantown Utilities superintendent.
