City Council: Police, Billboards, and Clean-Up Days

The Morgantown City Council discussed a MPD officer’s failure to pass the police academy and a new zoning ordinance on signs and billboards at Thursday’s regular monthly meeting.

Grubb Part of WKU's Concrete Canoe Team

For the second year in a row, WKU civil engineers took first place overall at the Ohio Valley Student Conference.

WKU students finished first in balsa wood bridge building, second in environmental engineering, third in steel bridge and concrete canoe and fared well in other events -- concrete horseshoes, concrete softball bat, technical presentation, surveying and AutoCAD -- at the regional competition April 4-6 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The WKU steel bridge team qualified for the national competition May 31-June 1 in Seattle.

Fiscal Court:Courthouse Renovations, Roads, and Joe Gaddie

Courthouse renovations, road aid funds, and an issue from 2010 that has resurfaced recently dominated the discussions at the Monday night meeting of the Butler County Fiscal Court. The meeting was the regular meeting for April and all members were in attendance, as well as some visitors, including former Butler County Sheriff Joe Gaddie.

To open the meeting 5th District Magistrate Keith Daugherty asked that the minutes from the regular March meeting be amended to withdraw a motion to add Overlook Drive into county road maintenance.

Beshear allows hemp bill to become law without his signature

Gov. Steve Beshear said Friday that he would allow the so-called hemp bill to come law without his signature.

“I strongly support efforts to create additional legal cash crops for our farm communities," Beshear said in a statement issued by his office. " At the same time, we have a tremendous drug problem in Kentucky, and I want to make sure that we don’t do anything that will increase that drug problem. I still share the same concerns our law enforcement officers have about the impact hemp cultivation may have on our drug eradication efforts.

Butler County Hard Hit by Diabetes

Of the people living in Butler County, 8.1%  have been diagnosed with diabetes, The Barren River District Health Department’s diabetes program, the Diabetes Center of Excellence (DCOE), wants to help people with diabetes and their family members learn how to manage their condition.

April “Child Abuse Prevention Month” in Butler County

Butler County Judge-Executive David Fields and Morgantown Mayor Linda Keown signed a proclamation on Thursday, declaring the month of April “Child Abuse Prevention Month” in Butler County.
Approximately 3,000,000 children are reported abused or neglected in the United States each year, with 802 rports of abuse or neglect substantiated and/or in need of services in the Barren River Area Development Districts from January 2012 through December 2012, and of these reports, 57 cases were substantiated and /or in need of services in Butler County, effecting 135 children.
