Local option "wet-dry" petition submitted for Woodbury; Morgantown & Rochester may be next

With a local option countywide "wet-dry" election now in the rear-view mirror, another one may be on the horizon soon in Butler County.  Josh Hampton, spokesperson for Citizens for a Better Butler County, officially submitted a local option petition to Butler County Clerk Sherry Johnson earlier today - Friday, July 8.  The petition has 13 names.  According to Johnson, 19 people who live in the Woodbury city limits voted during the 2015 General Election.  As of May 12, Woodbury had a total of 66 registered voters - all of whom vote in the North Second precinct.  Meeting a 25 perce

New store in Morgantown

A new grocery store catering to the growing Hispanic population in Morgantown and Butler County is now open.  Tienda Hispano officially opened its doors on Saturday, June 25, following prayer and a ribbon-cutting.  The store is located on G.L. Smith Street (U.S. 231) in Morgantown beside Friendly Furniture.

FISCAL COURT: Magistrates accept fuel bids, discuss fire dues, reject AlertSense

Fifth District Magistrate Bobby Moore and Fourth District Magistrate David Whittinghill.

Butler County Fiscal Court met on Thursday, June 30, in a called meeting with a brief agenda.  Magistrates Stevie Givens, Chad Tyree, Bobby Moore and David Whittinghill were present, along with Judge-Executive David Fields.

The 36th Annual Green River Catfish Festival wrapped up on Monday night, July 4, with the opening of the tagged catfish winners and a fireworks extravaganza.

Single-car crash claims life

A single car accident over the holiday weekend has claimed the life of a Butler County man.  Joshua White, 32, was traveling in a Chevy S-10 pickup on a private road off High Grover Road near the Gilstrap-Dexterville-Banock area of Butler County.  The accident took place on Friday, July 1, at approximately 6:54 p.m.  White apparently came around a curve, struck part of a concrete bridge, lost control of the vehicle, and left the road.

Campbellsville University honors Butler County Teachers

            Rhonda Sims, associate commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Education, told the 199 teachers from 70 school districts throughout Kentucky honored by Campbellsville University, teaching is an important job, a hard job and a challenging job.

Housing Authority: Board approves resolution dealing with T.L.C. lawsuit; discusses housing renovations

The Morgantown Housing Authority held its monthly meeting on Monday, July 27, at the Kent Manor Community Room.  Chairperson James Dossey called the meeting to order.  In attendance were Billy Warren, Mayor Billy Phelps, Iris Moore, Pam Staples and Anita Jenkins. 
Anita Jenkins reported that the Dabbs-Tuck kitchen and bathroom renovations had passed the final inspection. James Dossey indicated that he attended and reported at the last Morgantown City Council meeting on behalf of the board.

Goff Named Principal At Caverna High School

 Former Butler County native Chase Goff was introduced Tuesday morning as the new Caverna High School principal.

Superintendent Cornelius Faulkner made the announcement at a meet and greet at the school and talked about Goff's selection.

“We were looking for someone who could promote a positive school culture,” Faulkner said. “Be very consistent, fair and follow through. Hold people accountable. Promote communication effectively and efficiently. Be very organized and structured. A team player, and, most of all, an instructional leader.

Fiscal Court: Cooling Problems, Roads, and Recycling

The Butler County Fiscal Court met on Monday night.

Two items of old business needed attention from the Court; the removal of JR Huff Road from the county road system, and enrollment in the AlertSense emergency notification service.

Fourth District Magistrate David Whittinghill informed the Court that consideration of the removal of JR Huff Road needed to be tabled until both landowners could come to an agreement about the road's removal. A motion to table passed 5-0.
