Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

January and February are my least favorite months. These months are made up of mostly cool to cold days, and the sky is often overcast. As a result, I stock up on specific supplies – not necessarily “groceries.” Although I appreciate a warm house, running water, food in the house, and television and Internet access, I need a few more things. My stockpile for January and February includes the following supplies.

-Warm clothes – Even though my thermostat stays at the same temperature, I choose warm clothing for cold-weather days. I don’t spend much time outdoors, but warm clothes are almost instinctive. Having grown up on a farm, I dress warmly on cold days. I like corduroy pants, sweaters, flannel shirts, sweatshirts, and warm socks. As one of my brothers would say, “It is what it is.” Yes, I have plenty of warm clothing.

-Mysteries and Sudoku puzzles – These two pastimes entertain me. I usually have a half-dozen or more unread mystery books to choose from and order more before the stash gets too low. Sudoku puzzles can be found about anywhere – in stores, in newspapers, and online (some free, some not). I have a book in progress almost constantly, and spend some time working Sudoku puzzles most days. Since mysteries and Sudoku puzzles entertain me, they are definitely stockpiled in cold-weather months.

-Snacks – I am a diabetic, but I snack – just not a lot per day. Since I like a variety of snacks, I keep on hand: hot tea, hot cocoa, flavor packs to add to water, almonds, fruits, popcorn, tortilla chips, several candy choices, popcorn, crackers, and two or three ice cream bar choices. Using the MyFitnessPal app to record my foods helps me to avoid eating too much. I like snacks and keep them available. After all, who knows when I might need a good snack?

Although my stockpile of supplies for cold-weather months may not match yours, it certainly helps me get through the cold-weather months. I am very thankful for basic necessities and for my stockpiled supplies. May we all stay healthy and enjoy these cold-weather days!
