Don Locke: Looking Through Bifocals

You can rent a casket now in some places. 'Course it goes without saying only if you plan to be cremated. Three days rent on a casket is cheaper than buying one.

Cheryl Hughes: Possibility

My Career As A Woman

I traveled to Murray on Thursday to see my sister, Marsha.  We hadn’t seen each other since before Christmas, so I had a box full of presents for her family.  I gave Marsha and my niece and nephew’s wife some of the bottles I’d slumped into cheese and cracker trays.

Legislative Update by C.B. Embry, Jr.

High Court Ruling Means Legislators Stay in Current Districts

FRANKFORT, Ky. – It appears the debate over redistricting, which has gripped much of the 2012 Legislative Session, has come to a conclusion at least for now.  Last Friday’s ruling by the Kentucky Supreme Court throwing out new district boundaries passed in January ends what has been a roller coaster of a ride for legislators and those of you we represent.

Letter to the Editor: What's on your plate?

What's on your plate? If you do not eat locally grown, raised, and/or produced food, then more than likely, you are eating food that is not real. This “food” has been chemically processed and refined while adding artificial ingredients to produce it in different shapes, sizes, tastes, colors, and forms. And since our government allows genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to be consumed by humans and farm animals, our “food” may contain foreign genes, which have been spliced together in laboratories.

Frogs and taxpayers in hot water

No doubt you’ve heard about the frog feeling pretty comfortable in a tank of cold water but ending up boiling to death as the heat is gradually turned up.

There was no lid on top of the tank keeping the frog from jumping out. Yet he didn’t.  He stayed in the tank and literally overheated.

Why? Because he didn’t realize the danger he was in – at least not until it was too late.

The story may not be biologically accurate, but it works metaphorically to describe the plight of Kentucky’s budget and its taxpayers.

Debby Burden-Lanham: A View from My Lens...

This gorgeous sunset picture I captured is by far one of my favorites yet. Sunsets are so relaxing and can sure make even a bad day good.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Hello. My name is Andy Sullivan and I am a sports addict.  There are many benefits of being a sports addict/fanatic.  Viewers often sit in front of their television or in an arena with your favorite snack and cheer like crazy for your favorite.  I do notice one drawback.  When you’re watching or listening to a game, media bias is painfully prevalent and very noticeable.

Patty Craig: Leap Year

A Slice of Time

This week we have a February 29th. This means that 2012 is a leap year, having 366 days instead of 365 days. So, 2012 will have 24 more hours this year.

This additional day once every four years keeps the calendar year in sync with the astronomical or seasonal year. The earth’s orbit around the sun isn’t completed in exactly 365 days. By adding this day, we compensate for the fact that our 365-day year is shorter than a solar year by almost six hours.

Brett Guthrie: Here to Help

Dear Friends,

Recently, many of you have contacted my office with questions about congressional redistricting.  I wanted to send you a quick note to clear up any confusion.

On February 10, 2012, the Kentucky General Assembly approved, and the governor signed into law, new Congressional District boundaries. The U.S. Constitution requires congressional districts to be based on the census done every ten years and lines redrawn to accommodate population changes.

Don Locke: Looking Through Bifocals

I don't know about now, but back when I was a kid every boy dreamed of coming out on the basketball floor in a uniform, before a cheering crowd.

Mine came true to an extent . . . but the crowd wasn't large. Just the kids that didn't ride the bus; we played after school.
