Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

I remember watching Larry Hagman as J. R. Ewing, as most everyone my age and older surely does as well, every Friday night.  From 1978-1991, J.R.  Ewing was the character on Dallas that everyone loved to hate.  350 million tuned in for the November 21, 1980 “Who Shot J.R.” cliffhanger (it turned out to be J.R’s wife’s sister).  I probably watched all but the first year of the show, being as I wasn’t born when it premiered.
Dallas returned Mr. Hagman to television after his co-starring role on the 1960’s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie.  In a 1980 interview, Mr. Hagman stated “life is terminal.  Death is not”.  Larry Hagman was born September 21, 1931.  The son of legendary actress Mary Martin and a district attorney, he moved to Las Angeles, California to live with his grandmother after his parents divorced.
He had numerous guest-starring roles between Jeannie and Dallas.  The idea for Dallas came in 1977 and he was set when the series premiered in 1978.  He hosted “Lone Star-an eight part documentary in 1985.  That aired while celebrating the 150th anniversary of Texas as an independent republic.  In 1996, a year after his liver transplant, he starred in Dallas: J.R. Returns.  The movie was a huge ratings success for CBS.  His second Dallas reunion movie, Dallas: War of the Ewings, aired in 1998 in which he was also executive producer.
Larry Hagman passed away at age 81 on November 23 at Medical Center Dallas Hospital in (where else) Dallas, Texas from complications of throat cancer.
