MIDDLE OF THE ROAD

Since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, the Fourth of July has been observed as a day for patriotism and unity. It is on this day that exemplary visionaries dared to create a new form of government for a new people — a country in which freedom reigned. It is with celebration, reflection, and remembrance that we observe this Independence Day.

Ten years ago this week, Tuesday to be exact, two pretty important events occurred in the life of this then 30 year-old.  I was on the way to my final college class-which was really a dinner, as we’d already finished all our coursework.  I can’t recall exactly where we ate.  It’s been a decade so it might not even be there anymore.

I once read where a writer and philosopher said “The end is near when we no longer talk to ourselves” He explained, “It is the end of genuine thinking and the beginning of final loneliness. It also marks the non-concern about the world around us.”

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching, and I’ve been thinking about our nation. I am proud of our nation, but have a few concerns. I believe a directional adjustment is needed regarding some issues.

Childhood should be carefree. Every child deserves to feel safe, cared for, and nurtured. This includes the nearly 10,000 Kentucky children in foster care and almost 100,000 in kinship care, a rate which is more than double the national average. They are not responsible for the circumstances that brought them into out-of-home care, whether that be drug addiction, incarceration, abuse or neglect.

On Sunday, I heard Sherry Lansing (film director) say, “If you take risks, you’re going to be wrong as much as you’re right.  That is the pain of life and the joy of life.” (CBS Sunday Morning)

Perhaps the most common attitude among “religious” people is the attitude that one church is as good as another. Many who believe it “taboo” to talk about religious matters will say words to the effect, “You do what you want to do and I’ll do what I want to do in religion.” Once the conversation turns to religious matters, some will cut you off saying words to the effect, “Just stop right there, I’m satisfied with what I have!” Friends, what does this say about people’s attitudes?
