Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

As I write this on a Tuesday morning, we are a day removed from the shocking loss of comedian and actor Leslie Jordan.  From NBC’s Will & Grace to FOX’s Cool Kids, FX’s American Horror Story to his current role as Phil on FOX’s Call Me Kat, not to mention his breakout star turn on Instagram keeping us all entertained during the early days of the pandemic, Leslie was practically everywhere.

Cheryl Hughes: The One That Didn't Get Away

I believe I’ve told you before that the worst night of my life was spent on the banks of the Warrior River in Alabama, watching and waiting as Garey and my father-in-law ran a trotline.  They made an event of the process; cooking eggs over an open fire, making coffee in a Crisco can—which is okay if you don’t mind straining grounds through your teeth—and sleeping on plastic on the always-damp riverbank. “I was promised there would be fun,” I said to myself, as I huddled close to the fire and sulked.

Jarrod Jacobs: What You Can Do With Faith

Faith is defined as: “firm persuasion; A conviction based upon hearing” (Vine, p. 411). Mr. Vine’s definition is based on what the apostle Paul said in Romans 10:17. Paul wrote, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Now that we know how to obtain faith let us study the Bible and learn what we can do with faith once we have it.

A Slice of Time by Patty Craig

With cooler weather, I’ve been looking at soup recipes. I often make chili, potato soup, taco soup, and vegetable soup, but I came across some soup recipes that I haven’t made. Three of those are listed below. I’m looking forward to trying them soon.

Cheryl Hughes: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Mother Teresa said, “We fear the future, because we are wasting today.”  For some people, that statement needs to be amended to, “We fear the future, because we THINK we are wasting today.”

Jarrod Jacobs: The Priceless Word of God

Do we know the value of God’s word? Many consider God’s word worthless. Yet, those who are spiritually minded (I Cor. 1:18) and love the Lord place great value upon God’s word. What makes the word of God priceless?

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

Last week, I began reviewing the timeline of events chronicled in Billy Joel’s 1989 classic “We Didn’t Start The Fire”.  Today, we pick up where we left off: 1960.

Cheryl Hughes: Friendliness

On Saturday, October 1st, my sister, Lorrie, and I took my stepmom to the Apple Festival in Paintsville, Kentucky.  Mom will be 90 years old on October 15th, and she still gets around pretty good with her cane on even ground.  The ground at the festival was anything but even, however, so we decided to rent a wheelchair for the day.

When we arrived at the festival, Mom balked at the idea of being pushed around in a wheelchair.  “I think I will do better walking,” she protested.

“Mom, you will do better in this wheelchair,” Lorrie said.

Jarrod Jacobs: The Focal Point of the Bible

If I were to ask you what the focal point of the entire Bible is, would you know the answer? Sometimes, folks approach the Bible with utter confusion. They have no idea what the Bible is about nor its central theme. To some, the Bible is a jumbled collection of sixty-six books written by men over thousands of years that have little to do with one another. If this is your approach to the Bible, then let this short article encourage you to change your thinking.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

One day last week, I was listening to The Blend on SiriusXM when Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start The Fire” comes on.  The song lyrics included a lot of classic events that shaped history.  The cutoff was the year the song was released, 1989.  The song was released as a single September 18, 1989 and later released as part of Joel’s Storm Front album on October 17, 1989.  A list song, its fast-paced lyrics include brief references to 118 significant political, cultural, scientific and sports events between 1949, the year of Joel’s birth, and 1989, in a mainly chronological order.
