Don Locke: Lookin Thru the Bifocals

Funny about people’s secret ambitions sometimes. Ted Datsun was the day supervisor of the chemical plant where I once worked in Texas and a graduate chemical engineer, pretty high up on the plant totem pole. Ted was an okay guy- not rank-happy no "big wheel" attitude, just a plain old Texas boy not afraid to pitch in and give a hand if need be even though he was furnished a plush office and pick up truck which he was in more than in his office.

Although I watch the news, I would not claim to know a lot about current events. However, three events that recently made the news touched me – for very different reasons.

Do you remember that scene in the movie, “Christmas Vacation,” where Chevy Chase gets locked in the attic, and he’s walking around on the floor, which is the ceiling below, and he accidentally steps onto the soft plaster and falls through to the bunk beds below?  I did that this weekend, minus the cushy bunk beds below.

Jarrod Jacobs: “A Diary Of A Bible”

Jan. 10. Been resting for a week. The first few nights of the New Year my owner read me regularly, but he has now forgotten me already, I guess.
Feb. 7. Clean up time. I was dusted with other things and then put back on the shelf.
Feb. 9. Owner used me for a short time after dinner looking over a few references. Went to Bible school today.

Old school vs. new school is an argument that is as old as time.  It’s really a matter of how you grew up and what you know.  The reason I bring this up is the latest dust-up in the ageless old vs. new argument.  This time it’s Brantley Gilbert vs. Travis Tritt.

How many choices or decisions do you make each day? Do you believe that people generally makes a few hundred or a few thousand choices each day? The number may depend on how we define decision.

I only had a passing acquaintance with Roy, a real likable guy, lots of friends; Roy taught on agriculture over in the eastern part of the state. We passed and repassed at state Ag teachers conferences each summer.
Tragically Roy’s life was cut short over 25 feet of road right away.. Was it worth it?  No

My friend, Sandra, asked me to set up with her at the Owensboro flea market over the weekend.  (Sandra is the one who taught me how to slump bottles.)  The event took place in the new convention center built on the old Executive Inn site.  It was the second such event to be held in the center.  I didn’t attend the first one held in March, but I understand it was a rousing success.  Most of the vendors expected the same from this one.  Most of the vendors were sorely disappointed.

First (at least for me) there was Facebook, followed by Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.  Social media is ever evolving, for better or worse.  Facebook was founded in February of 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg.  Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey in March 21, 2006.  Dorsey is an American web developer widely known as the co-founder and co-creator ( with Biz Stone) of Twitter.  Twitter is now worth billions of dollars. As of three years ago, it was worth more than $5 billion and climbing towards $10 billion in secondary markets.  Interested in an in-depth history of twitter?

My oldest grandson is graduating from Butler County High School this week. In our family, graduation is a time of family celebration. We celebrate the graduate’s accomplishment – reaching a milestone.
