Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

First (at least for me) there was Facebook, followed by Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.  Social media is ever evolving, for better or worse.  Facebook was founded in February of 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg.  Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey in March 21, 2006.  Dorsey is an American web developer widely known as the co-founder and co-creator ( with Biz Stone) of Twitter.  Twitter is now worth billions of dollars. As of three years ago, it was worth more than $5 billion and climbing towards $10 billion in secondary markets.  Interested in an in-depth history of twitter? Now we move onto the new kids on the ‘net. Snapchat is a photo messaging app developed by Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy.  The Stanford University graduated created the app for a product design project. Since the release of in September of 2011 the popularity of Snap chat has progressively increased. Approximately fifteen million snaps are sent everyday.
Sending your friends funny, humiliating pictures is always amusing. Danielle DeMario, A sophomore here at Marist explains that the limited time frame of the pictures you send is what makes Snap chat so appealing.
“I like Snap chat because I can send embarrassing pictures to my friends knowing that they can’t save them.”  Well, that is exactly what Snap chat is for. Snap chat allows you to send any kind of photo to your friends for a time frame of your choosing without the capability of them saving it. Once a picture is viewed, you cannot view it again.
This addicting app allows for quick interactions between friends. The convenience of Snap chat also helps your message get across more efficiently. Since the images are absent after a few seconds, more openness is evident and rids friends of an “online identity” that is often found on social media such as Facebook. Overall, snap chat is a positive form of social media. When used between friends, it allows us to stay connected while maintaining our legitimate personal image. Snap chat definitely stands out from other forms of social media; however, it is possible that its popularity will soon fade out such as many other apps have experienced.  I just started using the app myself a few months ago.
Instagram, founded by Stanford grad Kevin Systrom in 2006, is a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures. Snap a photo with your mobile phone, then choose a filter to transform the image into a memory to keep around forever. We're building Instagram to allow you to experience moments in your friends' lives through pictures as they happen. We imagine a world more connected through photos. The app is available for free in the I-tunes and Google Play stores. Where does the name come from? It’s pretty self-explanatory much like Snapchat.  When we were kids we loved playing around with cameras. We loved how different types of old cameras marketed themselves as "instant" - something we take for granted today. We also felt that the snapshots people were taking were kind of like telegrams in that they got sent over the wire to others - so we figured why not combine the two?
We love taking photos. We always assumed taking interesting photos required a big bulky camera and a couple years of art school. But as mobile phone cameras got better and better, we decided to challenge that assumption. We created Instagram to solve three simple problems:
1.    Mobile photos always come out looking mediocre. Our awesome looking filters transform your photos into professional-looking snapshots.
2.    Sharing on multiple platforms is a pain - we help you take a picture once, then share it (instantly) on multiple services.
3.    Most uploading experiences are clumsy and take forever - we've optimized the experience to be fast and efficient. You have “followers” on SC just as you do any other social media source.  You can choose to make your account private, which means only people who follow you on Instagram can see what you post.  I have my account set to private in case you were wondering.  It’s the smart thing to do.  You don’t want your stuff out there where anyone can get ahold of it.
All Instagram photos are saved to your camera roll.  You can then sync with your computer and print out as many as you like.  By the way, if you asked me to rank the four, it would go as follows: (1) Instagram, (2) Snapchat, (3) Twitter, (4) Facebook. IG and Snapchat are 1 and two because you only share pictures.  Be careful and happy surfing.  Share with caution.
