Monticello Baptist Church: Refreshing Perspective

Lydia Wells leads choir.

Sunday morning February 17th, Monticello Baptist Church turned the service over to the children of the church. Lydia Wells was the morning choir leader.  The choir was made up of the all the children. The congregation was blessed with an abundance of music.

Smith Funeral Home & Simply U Photography Team Up to Help St. Jude

Smith Funeral Home and Simply U Photography will be hosting their 3rd Annual St. Jude Easter Photo Fundraiser on Sunday, March 3 from 11 am until 4 pm at Smith Funeral Home.  Appointments are not necessary and there will be no outfit changes allowed.  We are asking for a donation of $25 for 1-4 people, $35 for 5-10 people and $50 for groups of over 10 people, these prices includes a 5 picture cd with up to 5 poses (depending on cooperation of the child).  Come help us help the children and families who are helped by St. Jude.  For more information contact Penni Lee at (270) 999-4111.

BC Sheriff & Extension Office Team Up for Drug Take Back Program

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Scottie Ward, and Tracy Cowles, Butler County Extension Family and Consumer Science Agent, will sponsor a DRUG TAKE BACK PROGRAM on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 10 am-2pm, at the Butler County Courthouse. The first 50 people will receive a free water bottle.

Miss Taylor Burden Crowned "Jr. Miss Sweetheart"

Miss Taylor Burden was crowned Jr Miss Sweetheart 2013, at a pageant on February 16th at the Ohio County Community Center. Taylor is the daughter of Chris and Tracy Burden. She also won most photogenic, prettiest smile, and prettiest hair. Congratulations Taylor!!!!

An impressive monument marks the graves of Veachel and Anthaline Flener.

Kentucky Genealogy and Biography Volume 3 (Battle-Perrin-Kniffin 1885 2nd edition) records that in 1870 Mr. Veachel Flener removed to Flenersville, “of which place he was the founder and proprietor.” Eleven years later, for their March 16, 1881 edition, a reporter for the Breckenridge News, in Cloverport, submitted the following story. Enjoy this snapshot of our past. All spellings were preserved.

Weight Watchers Meeting @BCMS Library

Enjoy a hearty 1880s menu typical of what would have been served at South Union’s famous railroad hotel, the Shaker Tavern.  The historic menu includes roast turkey and cranberries, baked macaroni and cheese, baked sweet potatoes, homemade apple sauce, breaded tomatoes, and walnut cake with whipped cream.

Kyle Whitaker: Not Out in the Sticks for Much Longer

On Saturday night, February 16, at 7:30 pm, SKYPAC in Bowling Green will feature the 2006 American Idol finalist, Bucky Covington.  His opening act will be Kyle Whitaker.

At the tender age of 26, Butler County native, Kyle Whitaker, is already a seasoned performer.  Of course, you’ll have to take into account that he started singing in front of an audience at the age of five.  His father, Jeff, served as guitar player for young Kyle as the five-year-old sang in local churches.  At fifteen, Kyle was part of Heaven Sent, a gospel quartet that toured in southern venues, and by age 22, he and four others (Joe Howe, Thomas Harris, Joe Pearl, and Cody Whitaker—Kyle’s brother) formed the group, High Country, a country music band that still performs locally and in t
