Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Record harvest for 2012-13 deer season in Kentucky

Kentucky deer hunters set a new harvest record for the 2012-2013 deer season that ended when archery deer season closed Jan. 21. They harvested 131,388 white-tailed deer, besting the previous record of 124,752 established during the 2004-2005 deer season.

Kentucky deer hunters will have lots of ground venison for chili this winter, roasts to bake with onions, celery and vegetables and back strap chops to grill during the summer.
That’s because a record deer harvest was posted for the 2012-13 deer season, which ended with the close of archery season on Jan. 21.
Hunters bagged 131,388 whitetails of which 56 percent were male and 44 percent female. Firearms hunters reported taking 95,612 deer while archers harvested 18,705 deer. Muzzleloader hunters took 14,583 deer and crossbow hunters, 2,488 deer.

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Winter habitat improvement projects in woodlands

The cold-weather months are a good time to start wildlife habitat improvement projects in woodlands. After the leaves are down there’s a much clearer view of the forest canopy. It’s easy to see tree crowns and the individual tree growth in relation to one another.
Start your chainsaw work in late January, after deer season closes, and finish up by mid-March, so turkeys won’t be disturbed as they begin their spring mating rituals.
