Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Winter habitat improvement projects in woodlands

The cold-weather months are a good time to start wildlife habitat improvement projects in woodlands. After the leaves are down there’s a much clearer view of the forest canopy. It’s easy to see tree crowns and the individual tree growth in relation to one another.
Start your chainsaw work in late January, after deer season closes, and finish up by mid-March, so turkeys won’t be disturbed as they begin their spring mating rituals.

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Enjoy seasonal catch and release trout streams this winter

Dave Baker, editor of Kentucky Afield magazine, casts a fly in Otter Creek in Meade County for trout during a snow shower. Otter Creek is one of the 13 seasonal catch and release trout streams across Kentucky that offers quality trout fishing all winter long.

The buzz of the holidays is gone for another year. The college football season is over until next fall. Most hunting is gone until then, too. The sky is often low, leaden and depressing in January and February.
The stretch from New Year’s to the first warm shirt-sleeve weather of March is often a long, arduous stretch of weeks. Cabin fever inflicts anglers as they pine for the sound of a drag singing, the gentle gurgle from water flowing over riffles and the satisfaction and tired body from a day of wading a stream.

Lady Bears Fall to Breck and ACS

The Butler County Lady Bears started 2013 off at a hectic pace as they played Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.  First on tap Butler County traveled to Breckinridge County to face off with the Lady Tigers without Madeline Drake in the lineup and a very sick Lynsie Clark.  Offensively Butler County struggled.  Chloe Flener made the only two baskets in the first quarter as Breck outscored the Lady Bears 12-8 behind Emma Payne’s 7 points.    Flener and Allie Easley picked up two more baskets in the second quarter as Katie Graham added four fouls shots and Lynsie Clark hit two from the lin

Use the winter downtime to conduct maintenance on fishing reels, rifles and shotguns. This time of year is also an excellent time to upgrade fishing equipment during clearance sales.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – It’s the time of year for resolutions that make us feel good for a few days after making them, but lie in the junk heap of our actions by Valentine’s Day.
