Mammoth Cave Research Symposium

“Celebrating the Diversity of Research in the Mammoth Cave Region” is the theme of a research symposium Feb. 14-15 at the Rotunda Room of the Mammoth Cave Hotel.

The symposium, the 10th in 22 years, will feature more than 60 presentations (posters and talks) covering a variety of natural resource, cultural, historical, archeological, educational and social science research activities from the Mammoth Cave area.

BC Sheriff's Department Adds Computers to Cruisers

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department now has new tools to help with law enforcement, and to help the deputies and staff handle their duties more efficiently. Sheriff Scottie Ward unveiled his deputy’s new cruiser computer systems, and is pleased with the results so far.

Ag Commissioner James Comer Promotes "Ag Tag" Program

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James R. Comer made a stop in Butler County on the morning of Tuesday, January 29th as part of his 7-day trip throughout 36 counties in Kentucky to raise awareness for the farmer "Ag Tag" program. The "Ag Tag" program is a voluntary $10 donation that can be made when the time comes to renew vehicle tags that are listed as "farm". The $10 donation, if made, will be split 3 ways among the FFA, 4-H, and Kentucky Proud programs.

Butler County Retailers Sold $1,466,784 in Lottery Tickets

Butler County’s various Kentucky Lottery retailers had a record year in 2011, according to figures made available by the Kentucky Lottery Corporation.

In Fiscal Year 2011 local retailers sold $1,466,784 in tickets within Butler County. By way of comparison Jefferson County retailers sold the most tickets with $178,743,821 of lottery sales, and Carlisle County had the lowest ticket sales with $195,590 in tickets sold. Statewide the Lottery generated $771,177,383 in revenue.  Two counties in Kentucky, Hickman and Robertson, have no Kentucky Lottery retailers.

Law enforcement bands together to oppose hemp bill

Industrial hemp production in Kentucky is not economically sound, would impose an unnecessary financial burden on the state, and could facilitate future efforts to legalize its cousin - marijuana, according to law enforcement officials across the commonwealth.

Meth Lab On Russellville Road

A second meth lab this year was discovered on Russellville Road.  Acting on a tip Butler County Sheriff’s Deputies found an active lab at 2308 Russellville Road.

Chamber Hosts Luncheon

 President Runion welcomes members and guests Thursday.

Following a rousing round of applause for the BCHS boy’s basketball team who, minutes before, had just finished their game in Frankfort Thursday, Chamber president, James Runion welcomed everyone to the first chamber luncheon of 2013. The meal was furnished by Green River Caterers.

First time guests included Amy Sutherland with the Butler County Boys and Girl Club, representatives from WKU Workforce Development Training, the American Red Cross and Suzanne Miles, Field Representative for Congressman Brett Guthrie.

Congressman Guthrie to Visit Butler County Wednesday

United States Representative Brett Guthrie will be in Butler County on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, to hold office hours from 11:30 till 1:00pm with his constituents. The meeting will be held at the Butler County Ag Extension Office located at 112 E GL Smith Street in Morgantown.

Congressman Guthrie represents Kentucky's Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Radon: Test. Fix. Save a Life.

The Barren River District Health Department is working to raise awareness about the dangers of radon gas.  Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that is dispersed in outdoor air, but which can reach harmful levels when trapped in homes and buildings. Scientists have long been concerned about the health risks of radon, and there is overwhelming proof that exposure to elevated levels of radon causes lung cancer in humans.
