Green River NSDAR teaches patriotism and love for the flag

Before school was out for the summer, Regent and Flag Chairman Melanie Hunt, Casey Porter, DAR member and Christine Coleman, Registrar presented a program to 115 members of the 2nd Grade at Morgantown Elementary School.  Mrs. Coleman talked to the students about patriotism and Regent Hunt taught them about respect for the flag.  The finale to the program was reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.  Each student was given a flag and copy of the Flag Code to take home.

Police surround trailer, arrest man involved in domestic dispute

A Leonard Oak man is behind bars today following a domestic dispute and brief standoff with police on Sunday evening.  Bryan S. Proctor, 30, was arrested, taken to the hospital for treatment, and returned to the Butler County Jail.

Jeff Jennings to be new principal at North Butler

Butler County Middle School Principal Jeff Jennings has been named the new principal at North Butler Elementary School.  Jennings will replace long-time principal Elaine Daugherty, who announced her retirement at the end of the 2011-12 school year.   

According to school officials, the North Butler Elementary Site-Based Decision Making Council held a special-called meeting this morning - Friday, June 8 - for the purpose of interviewing applicants for principal, discussing applicants, and possibly selecting a new principal.

Suspected car thief caught, now behind bars

One man is behind bars after allegedly stealing and selling the car of a Morgantown Care and Rehab resident. David Allen Bowlds has been lodged in the Butler County Jail and is facing felony theft by unlawful taking charges.

The 1991 silver Chevy Lumina owned by Elzie Hoops was reported missing by his niece, who looks after his house on Dunbar Coal Road. Butler County Sheriff's Deputy Trey Flener traced the car and found that it had been sold at a recycling center in Ohio County. Bowlds was arrested by Flener on Monday afternoon.

Charley Biggs' Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Members of the Butler County-Morgantown Chamber of Commerce gathered at Charley Biggs' this afternoon for their ribbon-cutting ceremony. Charley Biggs' has been serving up chicken, desserts and smoked foods since opening up in late May. The restaurant is owned by James and Jean Beattie.

Rep. C.B. Embry, Jr. Participates in Groundbreaking for Walter T. Kelley Postsecondary Education Building

Representative C.B. Embry, Jr. joined with local leaders and others, including Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center CEO Steve Meredith, and Dr. Thelma White, President of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College,  in breaking ground on the new Walter T. Kelley Postsecondary Education Building on Thursday, June 7th.  The groundbreaking  took place at the building site located on Wallace Avenue, Leitchfield.

Celebrate Flag Day June 14

Thursday, June 14th at 10:00 AM in the Courthouse yard Butler County Chapter NSDAR will hold its annual observance of Flag Day. Lois Russ, Flag chairman for the Butler County Chapter NSDAR announced that the speaker will be Linda Tyree, school counselor at Morgantown Elementary and Scott Flener will be singing our National Anthem.

Council approves cost-of-living raise for city employees & first reading of budget

Following a one-hour work session on next year’s annual budget, the Morgantown City Council met in a special called session Thursday night at the Eva Hawes Ag Expo and Community Center.
 
The Council amended the current fiscal year budget to increase spending authority in two areas.  The street fund was increased from $390,000 to $405,000, and industrial development was increased from $20,000 to $25,000.

Butler County FFA Heads to State Convention: Daugherty To Be Named Kentucky Agriculture Teacher of the Year

The 83rd Annual Convention of the Kentucky Association FFA will be held in Lexington, Kentucky, on June 12-14 at the Lexington Center. The Convention will begin on Tuesday, June 12, according to Kendall Mallory, President of the Association and Brandon Davis, State Advisor of the approximately 15,000 member student organization.  Approximately 2,200 FFA members, advisors, and guests are expected to attend this meeting.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: City officials ponder the future as work continues on Comprehensive Plan

Our vision is being a vibrant, thriving community rooted in our heritage, flourishing in opportunities for citizens of all ages who take pride in themselves and in their community.”

This vision statement was developed a few months ago to guide city officials and boards as they make decisions concerning the city of Morgantown.

The Morgantown City Council and the Planning and Zoning Board held a work session on Tuesday night, June 5, to help develop goals and objectives that will be included in the City of Morgantown's Comprehensive Plan.
