Cheryl Hughes: Have You Ever Had One of Those Weeks?

Cheryl Hughes ... My Career as a Woman

Have you ever had one of those weeks that started out alright, but then took on a life of its own, and all you could do was go along for the ride?  It has been one of those weeks.

John Embry's Out on a Limb: Deliverance

I am hoping there is deliverance.  Four years ago my Dad was struggling to stay alive.  Stricken with an illness that none of us understood, my Dad meandered back and forth between the Medical Center at Bowling Green, SKY Rehab and Vanderbilt University Hospital.  He was dying but we didn't know it - at least not initially. I withdrew, leaving my sisters and my Mom to deal with the unpleasantness of death.  They knew the inevitable before I did.

Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan

It’s that time again.  Time for college basketball! Thursday November 1 is UK’s first exhibition game. If you check out the pre-season rankings, it’s Indiana at 1, Louisville at 2 and defending National Champion Kentucky at 3.  This begs the age old question: what exactly is the point of preseason rankings? What do they mean? Do they hold any bearing on the season?

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Halloween has once again arrived! Many enjoy typical Halloween activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, visiting haunted attractions, and watching horror films. And, many of us eat too much candy – even when we’re supposed to be giving it to the little trick-or-treaters.

Cheryl Hughes: Final Resting Place

My Career As A Woman

When I moved to Galveston, Texas, for the two years I lived with my daughter, Nikki, I found that I readily adjusted to city life.  The noise didn’t bother me.  The traffic didn’t bother me.  I even grew to enjoy looking out of our apartment window and seeing Walmart—if I needed milk, I could just walk over and buy a jug.  The thing that did bother me, however, was the fact that there was no place to bury a deceased pet.  For a pretty price, you could have the pet cremated or buried in a pet cemetery, but there was no big oak tree, like I had back home, under which to give your pet a final

A Beautiful Death by Jarrod Jacobs

As we observe nature during this time of year, many will remark that the leaves are beautiful right now. The many colors certainly attract our attention, and we note the beauty that is all around us. Such beauty is yet more evidence of a Creator. There is too much design and order in this world and universe to suggest that all things have occurred by random chance. At this time of year, the vegetation is preparing for the cold temperatures of winter.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE By State Representative C.B. Embry, Jr.

Why Letting Your Voice Be Heard is Important to the History of Our Country and Commonwealth

In less than two weeks you and others across our great Commonwealth will head to the voting booth and make your choice on who will represent you on the federal, state and local government levels.  Since 1787, when the U.S. Constitution was ratified, Americans have exercised their right to choose those who lead our government.

When asked about their least favorite medical visits between doctor and dentist, opinions vary.  As kids, my sister hated going to the doctor while I disliked the dentist.  For whatever reason, I was freaked out by dentist visits.

My maternal grandparents were very involved in my life and the lives of my siblings. They were like our second parents, which is probably as it should be. In my eyes, my grandmother was an amazing woman.

Since grandparents have a role in the care and nurture of grandchildren, they often hold a special place in the hearts of family members. The following quotes represent some of those thoughts:

• A grandmother is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend. -- Author Unknown

It's in the Love, Not the Blood: The Unexpected Sign

I began working for the Family Enrichment Center 4 years ago.  When I was offered the job as the Program Coordinator for the Adoption Resource Program, my first thought was I can’t believe someone is going to pay me to talk about my family’s adoption experience in an effort to recruit more foster and adoptive families in our area.

I absolutely love my job and the people I work with are like a second family.  My co-workers have been my second biggest supporters (my husband is my number 1 fan), when I have had to step out of my comfort zone and be in the public eye.
