Against The Grain by: Andy Sullivan
When asked about their least favorite medical visits between doctor and dentist, opinions vary. As kids, my sister hated going to the doctor while I disliked the dentist. For whatever reason, I was freaked out by dentist visits.
In my childhood ideology, I’m sure I pictured my dentist akin to Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: that mask made him look the part. If he wore a full purple outfit, that would’ve sealed the deal! Granted, at the dentist, much like the doctor, they’ll blind you with that light they shine in your eyes. In both instances, I see little light blurbs for a few minutes after. I say they’re little creatures.
In fact, I’m writing this one day before going to the dentist. I just got that trusty reminder call from our awfully cheery receptionist. When I get to the dentist, I don’t think they’re very concerned for those, like me, who have sensitive teeth. Some are, but I usually get the one who isn’t. She’ll get in there and scrape around, and when it’s done it looks like a horror film has taken place.
Don’t get me started on the fluoride. At least they’ve made some different flavors lately so it tastes better. It still feels like a mouth full of broken up chalk when you get right down to it, though. Not painting a pretty picture, am I? Well, once you get past those two parts, it’s not that big of a deal. It’s just a few minutes out of your day, right?
As a kid, I never had too many cavities. As one would expect, that all changed once I got older. I guess you always have people telling you not to eat a lot of sweets as a kid. As an adult, you’re kind of left to your own devices. I’m not saying I go crazy with candy and cookies all the time. In fact, I’m not a huge candy eater. Maybe a big part of the reason is that I know what waits if I do eat a lot of candy. Needless to say, when Halloween comes, I watch my intake. Those sugar highs are rough, anyway!
