Letter to the Editor: C. Josh Givens

It was with great interest that I took in the story in the June 11 edition of The Banner-Republican concerning Morgantown’s listing as the 16th-poorest city in the United States. I have heard many differing opinions and thoughts on this information, with many attacking the numbers and citing an “inaccuracy.”

Don Locke: Lookin Thru the Bifocals

When you see this, Memorial Day will have come and gone.  I trust, though, those we memorialize will long be remembered.
Again permit me some thoughts and recollections about this day- once called “declaration day”:  This because fable visited the graves of loved- ones and placed flowers, and still do.

Cheryl Hughes: Wolf At The Door

Many times in my life, I’ve found myself interacting with Calamity Jane-type women—independent, self-sufficient, don’t-tell-me-I-can’t-do-that sorts.  I’ve always been a bit hesitant and somewhat shy, so I figure it’s God’s way of nudging me forward.  These women aren’t necessarily feminists, they’re more like pioneers.  Most, I believe, were born that way, and the ones who weren’t, were molded by their circumstances.

Jarrod Jacobs: “Doctrine Does Not Matter!”

When discussing certain Bible topics with others, and trying to ascertain what God wants us to do, have we ever heard someone say, “Doctrine does not matter, anyway”? Do we agree with this statement? Does doctrine matter when it comes to Bible subjects?

To begin, it is necessary to understand that the word “doctrine” as is used in Scripture simply means “teaching.” Thus, would it make sense to say, “Teaching does not matter”? Of course, not. Yet, there are many today who treat the doctrine or teaching of the Bible as unimportant. This is dangerous!

Andy Sullivan: CMT Awards

The official eight categories that made up the CMT Awards show would have to wait, as the show was opened by a pretty good skit spoofing the Boyonce/Solange/Jay-Z elevator situation.  The country version starred Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and show host Kristen Bell.  The very first performance was a ZZ Top, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan/Jason Derulo mash-up of “Legrange, “This is How We Roll” and Jason’s hit “Talk Dirty To Me”.

Funny about people’s secret ambitions sometimes. Ted Datsun was the day supervisor of the chemical plant where I once worked in Texas and a graduate chemical engineer, pretty high up on the plant totem pole. Ted was an okay guy- not rank-happy no "big wheel" attitude, just a plain old Texas boy not afraid to pitch in and give a hand if need be even though he was furnished a plush office and pick up truck which he was in more than in his office.

Although I watch the news, I would not claim to know a lot about current events. However, three events that recently made the news touched me – for very different reasons.

Cheryl Hughes: Falling Through the Cracks

Do you remember that scene in the movie, “Christmas Vacation,” where Chevy Chase gets locked in the attic, and he’s walking around on the floor, which is the ceiling below, and he accidentally steps onto the soft plaster and falls through to the bunk beds below?  I did that this weekend, minus the cushy bunk beds below.

Jarrod Jacobs: “A Diary Of A Bible”

Jan. 10. Been resting for a week. The first few nights of the New Year my owner read me regularly, but he has now forgotten me already, I guess.
Feb. 7. Clean up time. I was dusted with other things and then put back on the shelf.
Feb. 9. Owner used me for a short time after dinner looking over a few references. Went to Bible school today.

Andy Sullivan: Against The Grain

Old school vs. new school is an argument that is as old as time.  It’s really a matter of how you grew up and what you know.  The reason I bring this up is the latest dust-up in the ageless old vs. new argument.  This time it’s Brantley Gilbert vs. Travis Tritt.
