Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

At the Barber Shop- The barber shop has always been the place to swap stories and talk about the goings-on of the day.  How exactly did the barber shop become the social hot spot and corner of conversation? Let’s delve into this subject a bit.
Barber comes from the Latin word “barba”, meaning beard.  In previous times, allegedly, barbers performed surgery as well (they were known as barber surgeons. I say allegedly because I can’t imagine a a barber performing surgery.  Although,  they are removing hair, so who knows?
Barbering was introduced in Rome by the Greek colonies in Sicily circa 296 B.C.  Barber shops quickly became popular for daily gossip, as well as debates.  Some of those debates might turn into arguments.
I’ve been to three barbers in my lifetime. Well, make that two.  Randall Pugh was a barber in Central City for many years.  He was the first barber I went to.  I was little, so I’d obviously go with dad, as it’s widely known that little kids can’t drive.  As is the case at times, you eventually have to find a new barber: be it the other switching careers, retiring, etc.  Finding a new barber is not the easy process you’d think.  I’m no Sheldon Cooper with his barber Mr. D’onofrio, however.  Go watch the Big Bang Theory 2012 episode “The Werewolf Transformation” if you’re not familiar.
I now go to Mighty sharp Barber shop in Ashley Plaza in Morgantown.  For the last several years, Reed House cut my hair.  Now Reed still cuts my hair, but when he’s busy, Rich Ellis cuts it.  Both are great barbers whom I highly recommend.  Mighty Sharp also upholds the tradition of the old-school barber shops-swapping stories and news. Let’s just hope that dentistry never enters the equation!
