Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

Last Sunday, our church had an “old-fashion day,” so dressing in outdated or casual clothing and eating outside were part of the day’s planned activities. We met at Joe and Fran Belcher’s home. We worshiped under shade trees, sitting on hay bales or in lawn chairs. Lunch was served on a large wagon and included a variety of delicious foods. This type of service is common in our region of the country.

Many people have used old fashioned to describe lots of things. Some of those quotes are listed below:
•    I think they all went too far. Their jeans got too low, their tops got too see-through. Personally, I think that sexy is keeping yourself mysterious. I'm really an old-fashioned girl, and I think I'm totally sexy. – Stevie Nicks
•    People know something has gone terribly wrong with our government and it has gotten so far off track. But people also know that there is nothing wrong in America that a good old-fashioned election can't fix. – Sarah Palin
•    We at Chrysler borrow money the old-fashioned way. We pay it back. – Lee Iacocca
•    I like to talk to people. I've got one assistant, one Blackberry. That's my overhead. I don't text that much or email. I like to sit down face-to-face and have a conversation with you. I'm old-fashioned. – Mark Wahlberg
•    In this era in which we live, the old-fashioned virtues grow increasingly unpopular. – B. Carroll Reece
•    If we're going to get this country out of its current energy situation, we can't just conserve our way out; we can't just drill our way out; we can't bomb our way out. We're going to do it the old-fashioned American way; we're going to invent our way out, working together. – Donald Sadoway

Bro. Jim McDaniel

Old-fashioned day services are fun; but, in summer weather, some things to consider might include:
1.    Should I take a folding chair? Water? Sunglasses? Bug spray?
2.    Should I wear light-weight, light colored clothes?
3.    For the cooks in the family: which dish shall I cook that will still be good after setting outside for a little while?
We were blessed that the weather was mild with a breeze and the setting included shaded areas with modern conveniences just inside the house.

My church –Richland Baptist – is made up of friendly, caring people, and Bro. Jim McDaniel preaches the Word. We would welcome you any time – “old-fashion day” or not. Romans 12:13b (NIV) cautions us to “practice hospitality.” Thank you, Joe and Fran Belcher, for your generous hospitality; it was a memorable day.

Morgan McKinney enjoyed the day.
