Jarrod Jacobs: Will Alcohol Sales Make Us Better?

The subject of alcohol sales in Butler County is now on the minds of several of her citizens. Some claim that selling alcohol will result in Butler County getting better. Perhaps alcohol sales would provide a financial boost for businesses in the area, but is this going to be our standard for making people better?

Aaron Jacobs: Points in American History-John Adams

One of our founding fathers who is often overlooked is John Adams. He did many things to help establish the United States, and I believe it would be beneficial if we looked at an overview of his life.
John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, in Braintree, Massachusetts. His father, John Adams, Sr., was a farmer and a town councilman. At the age of 16, John Adams earned a scholarship to attend Harvard University. After graduating in 1755, Adams studied law in the office of John Putnam, and in 1758, he earned a Master’s degree and was admitted to the bar.

Andy Sullivan: Against the Grain

The other day on the Dan Patrick Show, they were discussing what artist you’ve seen the most times.  The one that stood out most to me was NBA legend Bill Walton.  He says he’s seen the Grateful Dead at least 800 times in his life.  He still goes to see them, so that number is obviously climbing.

Patty Craig: A Slice of Time

We often bemoan how things change. For instance, I have always enjoyed coloring with my children and my grandchildren. But, I don’t think I’ve seen an adult coloring book or realized their popularity. According to a Daily News article (July 19, page 9C), they are on the best-seller lists. Coloring reportedly – and unsurprisingly – helps people relax. Since adults like word and number puzzles, why not coloring? Change is not always a bad thing.

Jeremy Hack: Producing the Catfish Festival Video

July 1-4 in our county often represents a time of celebration, reflection, fun and community. For most citizens the Catfish Festival is a yearly period in which they make wonderful memories with their family and friends, but to your friendly neighborhood video producer it represents something quite different. This article is meant to lay out at least a portion of what leads up to a production of this nature. I'll break the different processes into individual sections.

Cheryl Hughes: Stuff I've Learned from People who are Naked and Afraid

Have you seen the Discovery channel’s TV show “Naked and Afraid?”  If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and watch an episode.  Don’t worry if you have an aversion to naked people.  They block out the important parts.  Occasionally, you’ll see a naked butt, but that’s all.  They also bleep out any offensive language and gestures.  The show is billed as a docu-series.  I cannot stand reality TV because it seems so staged.  Naked and Afraid, however, puts itself out there.

Jarrod Jacobs: “The Making Of Many Books …"

In the long ago, Solomon said, “And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecc. 12:12). Solomon’s words ring true today, don’t they? When we think of all the books in existence on earth, the sheer volume is staggering! Perhaps one reason why there are so many books in existence is because many books have wrong information in them! Therefore, upon the publication of a book, another book is then written to answer, or correct the error in the first book. Take note of the U.S.

Andy enjoys the Beach Boys @SKYPAC

Thursday, July 23, I went to the SKYPAC to see the legendary Beach Boys.  From “Surfin’ Safari”, “God Only Knows” to “Surfer Girl” and “I Get Around”, they sang quite a bit of their stellar 54 year career.  Hard to believe they are still together since they formed in California in 1961, 18 years before I was born.

Don Locke: Looking Thru Bifocals....

One or two things.  Depends on how long I can make the first one last.  I do strive to give you my fifty-cent worth.  Self-worth is necessary for a healthy life.  The Bible says “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Sometimes we overlook thyself.  Therefore the Bible says self-worth is OK in moderation- not puffed-up or egotistical.

Josh Hampton: Letter to the Editor

I am Josh Hampton. I live in Butler County, KY. In addition to being an active father, loyal husband, caring dog owner and friend, I am also a contributing member to the local economy, serving as a working partner at Yellowberri, The Hampton Company, Beech Tree News & WLBQ, Butler County Arts Guild, HearBG and Big Head Studios.  There is certainly more available on request but I will spare you the rest of my resume. I tell you all of this not to boast, but rather to quantify my dedication to exploring ideas, in what I believe to be, toward the betterment of our local communities.
